Hey guys and gals! What I need to know is, what do I need to make my 1990 F150 front axle (dana 44 IFS) a Trac Lok system. I just rebuilt the 8.8 rearend with a stock Ford Trac Lok set up. I first thought about a spool, but now I want to go with clutches, as I do a lot of different things with my truck. Besides being a daily driver, I plow snow in the winter, and do a fair amount of off roading in the summer. I see a lot of different stuff on EBAY regarding DANA44, and am not really sure what I should be looking for. My axle ratio is 3:55. Thanks for the help! Scott.

 

A trac lok for the front is going to be tough to come by. They were a rare option from the factory. You'd be better off going with an aftermarket locker. It depends what you want to do with the truck. Maybe a selectable locker would work for you? They make some that are open when not engaged, and some that are limited slip when the locker isn't engaged.

If you do go with a locker, remember that it will really alter the way the truck steers when you're on the gas. That may or may not be an issue for you. You can also lock only one front hub to reduce that effect yet still give you increased traction.

 

What year and model Fords come with the rare Trac Lok? Are there any other automakers and/or models that use/used the Dana 44 Trac lok, that will fit my IFS? Thanks for your help. Scott.

 

It was an option, I don't think any particular vehicle had one. You're best bet for one would be eBay, but...they're very hard to find.

Have you looked into an ARB air locker instead? I have one in the front of my truck and it's freakin great. It's so much better to have that open/locked option up front. You probably wouldn't want a LS or straight Locker in the front diff if you drive in snow a lot. The ARB gives me the option of leaving it in open diff mode or locking it completely (spooled) which you can switch on the fly.

I've tried the 'lock only 1 hub' trick...doesn't work.

It makes the truck pull and you can't easily keep it straight.

But you're really lookin' for a needle in a huge hay stack...I personally wouldn't even bother looking for one...you can get an aftermarket limited slip instead, or locker, or selectable...

If it helps any, I worked for a Ford dealership for 11 years and never even heard of a front locker from the factory. I have the manuals on CD and none of them show a code for that as an option but that doesnt mean it didnt happen. My Manuals are froom 92-04. I agree with MustangGT221, you are loking for a rather rare item and it would be easier to get a air locker or electric locker from the aftermarket which is what I will be doing soon.

Not factory locker, factory limited slip. They're common in rear axles but very rare in the front. I wasn't thinking of buying one new or rebuilt, I was thinking junkyard searches or finding one used on the internet...

 

The Trac Lok is a limited slip. For both Front and rear axle. I thought about junk yards and used as well, but after buying my posi rear end and installing it in my truck, only to find out that it needed rebuilt anyway, I thought I might be better off, and cheaper off, buying a new unit. Now my whole drivetrain is almost brand new.

 

I have an 85 f-250 light duty that has a factory traction lock front Dana 44 HD axle. The tag on the front axle will have an L in the middle of the ration. For instance, mine says 3L54. If you don't want to have to look underneath the truck, the axle code on the door jamb will have three digits rather than the regular 2. The third digit will be a 2. For instance, mine reads B92. The B means Ford 10.25 Semi-Float, Limited slip rear axle. The 9 means 3.55 ratio, and the two means limited slip front. I hope this helps someone.

 

You can also jack up the wheels and if you turn a tire and they both turn in the same direction, it's an LS, if they spin in opposite directions, it's open.
