Looking to swap in a standard tranny

I'm looking to swap in a standard transmission into my '79 F-100 2wd. It has the 302 and c-4 tranny right now. I want to keep the 302 and swap in a decent, more performance oriented and not stump pulling type of standard tranny. Did these trucks in my configuration (2wd, long bed, 302) come with a floor shifted standard tranny? I know that I have to find the clutch linkage, flywheel etc. to swap trannies, i'm just at a loss of what tranny to use? This is a street truck and performance is what i'm looking for. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks!

You will have to find the clutch pedal assembly from another 75 to 79 Ford truck and bolt it into you cab which is a chore in its self. I did a 77 350 4 years ago and it took a bit of work but I got the pedal asembly in and bolted to the firewall. You will also need the clutch rod the equalizer bar and the mounts that go on the frame and the engine. As for a tranny I don't know what you could use as most of these old trucks used the NP435 or the T-18 BorgWarner you maybe beable to mount a tranny out of a Mustang into your truck if the bolt pattern matches to a truck bellhousing.

Its gonna take time collecting all the parts together then do the project.

I've done this twice, I hate automatics. Last time was a 71 with a 302 and c4. I put in a t-10 from a 65 mustang. Got the pedal assembly from a junk yard. Had a driveshaft modified to fit the transmission. No major problems.

get yourself a TOD out of a 79 ford 1/2 ton. its a t-10 with a floor shift and has 3.29 first 1.84 second 1.00 third and .69 overdrive in fourth. its great cause you can run low gears for the launch and still cruse at highway speeds.

ackusackus...

some have called it a T OD but it looks identacal to a toploader ford. cast iron case and tailshaft housing. it has a interesting logo on the side looks like a eagle and it says Orion on it. the tail housing has ford part # and the shifter is like a mustang but it is taller. I bought mine from a buddy that pulled it from a '79 F-150.

I sure would like to hear of any other performance oriented trannies that would work in trucks. I have a '68 with the straight six and the NP435. It's a great work tranny but it's no good for Hi-performance work! I was considering the Ford Toploader tranny but the 2.78 doesn't look low enough for 1st gear in a heavy truck. I know the T-10 had a 2.88 first in some applications but I'm having a hard time locating one set up for Ford's. I'm looking at the Tremec 3550 but its expensive at $1400.

Jeez - that's what I need in Harrison!...I used to love that aluminum Muncie close-ratio 4 speed behind the 454 in my 57 Cheby with it's 5:13 rear-end....
