My battery light has been staying on lately. The voltage gauge reads normal though. Does this mean that I need new batteries or could it be the alternator?
Look at the alternator and you will see the plug that goes into the voltage regulator. When your light is on pull that plug. if the light goes out its the ground inside your regulator. If the light stays on with the plug disconnected then there is a short somewhere in the wiring from the regulator to the light. I have a 99 and the light stays on all the time from this problem.
It must be the alternator cuz the volt meter started to drop while I was driving tonight. I made it home but the volts were down to about 9. Looks like a pretty easy job to change the alt. I just need to figure out where the idler pully is and how to loosen it up.
Hey just a word to you guys - don't run with your bad alternators too long - mine went bad a couple months ago - and it was getting HOT - like REAL REAL hot!! When I put the new one on - I had to use my welding gloves, AND a towel to lift the old one off!! I set it down on the concrete floor in my shop, and after I was all done with putting the new one in and tools put away - I STILL couldn't touch it without gloves on! Can u say fireball waiting to happen??

The ONLY hint I had was my aftermarket Autometer volt gauge - NO factory battery light or anything on the dash alerted me to any problem.
