I asked EuroLights what they had for the Aerostar. I said I hoped to get a better deer-warning system than the "whistles" someone installed which don't seem to effect the deer. This is what they said:

Ouch, the dealership that I work for sells them for $24 a pair. Wal-Mart $17. If you want high quality replacement bulbs, go with Sylvania Silver Star bulbs. They have been the best for years, and cost the same as your websites price. I have been running them for years and could not live without the high quality night vision they give compared to ordinary halogen bulbs.

install a pair of xexon blue white 4" dia driving lights with the xexon 100 watt H3 bulbs, far less expensive to replace when they burn out and gives a piercing blue white light for those long black dreary night drives with blackberry muttons jumping out. plus when one burns out on a long drive, still have the headlights for vision.
dual beam all in one headlights are a compromise for beam angle and focus.

we have 1000 lb elk here, will definitely crumple a grille.

I've tried bulbs from Eurolights before, and frankly I'm not impressed. Simply putting a colored filter on the bulb glass does not improve the output, I don't care what they claim. Any coating will be a restriction to light transmission, it cannot magicly increase the output.

To get a true improvement in lighting, you need a better beam pattern then the Aerostar lenses can give. They scatter too much of the light output and do not put light in the places on the road where it is most needed. You can put higher wattage bulbs in, which will help a little, but they will simply scatter more light.

The only solution I've found to improve headlight output is to retrofit the flush-style headlights with the earlier sealed beam lamps, then replace the sealed beams themselves with an H4 bulb conversion lamp, like the ones that Hella makes. I pulled all the parts I needed for this from a junkyard fairly cheaply. I have the Hella lamps in another car in my garage that I can "borrow" from. I just haven't yet had the time to put it all together. I did, however, switch over the sealed beams in my Capri and it made a huge difference. I used stock wattage bulbs, but the improvement comes from a better beam pattern that doesn't scatter and waste nearly as much of the light output from the bulb. These lights also respond quite well to wattage increases because of the their better beam pattern.

Of course, you can also mount driving lights, which are always a big help. I also have a pair of IPF lights (6.5"x8.5") that I've also been meaning to install. I just haven't come up with a good way to mount them (they are fairly heavy and need a beefy mount)...

Just my $0.02...

Thanks for the feedback. Especially the first hand experience with EuroLights. I think that I will add some quality driving lights for trips into deer country before I do anything to the factory headlamp setup. For around town they are adequate.

BTW, many online retailers and manufacturers have aitomated response systems. They don't add to the cost, rather they lower it.

definitely agree with torsen rick. i'm lucky that i started with an 89 aero that uses sealed beam. here's some comparo pic

ge high output sealed beam

bosch h4 sealed beam conversion

both headlamps replaced

huge improvement over the ge high output sealed beam. much better spread of beam, and most of the beam intensity is focused toward the road. so the beam is not wasted lighting up trees.

the bosch version i bought is E-code - meets european requirements and hence you see the sharp cut-off. dot does not have such requirements and hence you see the blotch of light.

by the way, the bulb i used in the conversion is a regular osram h4 bulb. tho in the pic it looks purply, its actually the typical halogen yellow.

The sharp cutoff (in low-beam) goes a long way to allowing a very bright light that still doesn't blind oncoming traffic. The little diagonal slash you see is to help illuminate road side signs. Along these lines, I'll note that DOT beam patterns also include a small spot of light like that which goes upward at a sharp angle. This is to light up overhead signs on the highway, which is real common in the US. The E-code lights don't typically do this. However, the high beam fills in a good portion of the area above the cut off.

I should take similar pictures with the lights on the Capri. FWIW, on that car, the lamps are the smaller 165mm rectangular type rather then the 200mm ones the Aerostar uses because of its pop-up headlamps. In that size, Hella makes a "Free Form" lamp aas well as a traditional parabolic. On these, the reflector has a unique, computer modeled shape to gather a greater % of the bulb output compared to a simple parabolic reflector shape.

Generally, Free Form lamps are 45% efficient rather then 35% for a parabolic lamp. Doesn't sound like a lot, but keep in mind that about 50% of the bulb output goes forward, away from the reflector, and the reflector can only work with the half that goes backward. So a reflector probably cannot exceed 50% efficiency without wrapping around ahead of the bulb (like a projector beam reflector does). Anyway, the marketing department says this about the FF lamps:

High quality Tempered Glass lenses and silverized polished aluminum reflectors create a beam pattern that will increase the available light on the road by 400% on low beam and 200% on high beam.
I'm sure that's compared to typical US-spec sealed beam, not an H4 parabolic E-code lamp. But even if its exagerated or under ideal conditions, it serves to underscore the advantages to be gained here. It's too bad that the FF lamp isn't made for the 200mm size. Or at least not yet. Then the lighting would be better still...
