1973 F100 - has a lot of slop in the steering. It has more than 1/8 but less that 1/4 turn of free play. Is there any adjustment or is a new steering box needed? It has power steering.
But, it could be something else.
Have you checked all the tie-rods and steering LINKAGE ?
S. box adjustment:
The adjustment screw has a locking nut on it.
While holding the slotted center screw > loosen the locking nut.
Now,while you are holding the locking nut >turn the screw in 1/4 at a time until the slack is within tolerances.
Tighten the locking nut everytime you make an adjustment.
Ok...now what if it's tight turning one way but extremely loose going the other way and making adjustments to the box doesn't help??? What would you think that could be?
1978 F-150 flareside. Primitive by todays standards but she was a jaw dropper back then. :-staun
Thanks for the response. In answer to your question, yes everything has been checked. In fact, everything that moves under the pickup is brand new. I just spent $1,300 replacing everything in the suspension and brakes except the steering box, power steering pumo, and the master cylinder. I don't know why I didn't replace the master cylinder - but I didn't.
Right now the pickup is in an air conditioning specialty shop getting an entirely new AC system modernized to use the R-134 setup.
As soon as I get it back, I'll check the steering box.
Jim , after you have done the steering box adjustment , take a look at your steering shaft that runs from the box UP to just past the little ujoint----they will get loose with age and add too the Looseness of your steering wheel------I replaced mine with one from Flaming river(Summit catalogue)-----made alot of difference---have a friend turn your wheel while you watch the ujoint with the hood up---you will probably beable too see the looseness in the shaft-----nothin ain't cheap is it!!!!!fd :-X11
Every time I see discussion on tightening the steering box I cringe.Your steering box does not wear even-most of the time spent driving is straight ahead so this is where it wears the most.If you tighten it so there is no slack in the middle[straight ahead] there's a good chance it's too tight when you turn sharp either way.
A friend of mine tightened his 73 F150 and later that day he rolled it when the steering gear locked up while he was making a sharp turn.
As far as I'm concerned, when they are worn badly, replace them.
