Second-Generation 6.7

I am looking for a used 2013 F250 or F350. I chose that year because I was told that it has the second generation 6.7 and is a much better engine. I was also told that some of the later 2012 models had the second-generation engine. Does anyone know what to look for to see if a used 2012 has the second-generation engine? Build date? Vin?

It was somewhere through 2011 that ford worked some bugs out, so 2012 till 2014 are the same. 2015 Ford updated the turbo and added an exhaust brake with a lttle more horsepower/ torque. Someone will correct if I got a detail wrong.

The second generation is considered to start at the 2015 model year. The '15+ models have a different turbo and various upgrades that raise the power output to 440 HP.

The 2011 models had a serious valve issue that we occasionally hear about The exhaust valves crack, and the chunks that break off trash the engine. Seems to happen most commonly after 100,000 miles, and the repair involves a complete engine replacement. The issue was fixed for the 2012 MY, so I would look at '12-present.

Moving the thread to the 6.7L forum!

for the 2012-2014's they revised the heads and valves and the turbo.

2013 DRW's got bigger brakes and an additional cross member for more towing and payload.

That is what I recall.

Is there a way to tell which engine I have? I bought my 2012 diesel in March 2012. I wonder if I have the improved engine or the older version?

I put a 145,000 on my very early build 2011. No valve problems. But did have to replace the oil and coolant connectors on the turbo.

Very early 2011 build with 228,000 miles and no issues with the valves or turbo. Radiators, thats a different topic altogether.

I don't think the radiator issue is unique to 2011 though...
