I just checked my build plate out of curiosity, and found that my explorer was built....get this....9/04. over a year ago, and it has been in my hands for a month or so. Could stale fuel have cuase damage, or anything? If I bring it to the dealer should they do a tune up for free?? My question is, it had 150 miles on it, and sat there most of the time. What's the deal? Why has it been sitting so long? How do I know that it hasn't been odometer roll back, or had another owner? Everythign smells and looks new, but I no longer have peace of mind if it had been built for that long and sat there....Of all the things that could happen in one day....
NO main stream branded new car dealer will risk odo roll back. Too risky anymore, and too much to lose and no incentive to do it with the price roll backs.
If you're that concerned, run a car fax on it. You should be the second owner, with Ford being the first. You'll also find if it has a salvage title which I feel is REMOTE, at best.
I'll check my build plate. Betcha I got the same thing going on. Bought a left over 05 last month.
Uh... how do I determine the "build date" ???????
Mine has done OK though. I DID change the earl and filter at 600 miles though.
I've seen some problems caused by stale fuel on cars that have sat on our lot for 6 months to a year. When a car is delivered from Ford, it has under 1/4 tank of fuel in it, so it doesn't take long to varnish. If you're not having any problems with it, I'd imagine that you're not going to, or would begin to experience them before the end of your warranty period.
I imagine there are no ill side effects to changing my oil now at 1,000 instead of 5,000. Since it sat so long i am going to have them run injector cleaner through it which should clean everything in the fuel lines. I don't think i'm going to waste my money on a carfax. Seeing as it has every option save the dvd player, i'm going to assume nobody wanted a fully decked out explorer... It has switched dealers a time or two though, which seems like no biggie...
Just found out the first oil change is free, so i think i am going to take advantage of that...The dealer gave me a bottle of MOC fuel system additive cleaner so i am going to try that. They said I don't need an injector clean unless it is stumbling....
I wouldn't worry about cleaning your injectors. As a matter of fact, Ford doesn't even recommend injector cleaning if there is no problem, as the injectors are "supposed to be" deposit resistant.
Oh...oops. I just had the annual service on the exporer 03 done and they did al the brakes, new rotors in the rear and injector service....oh well. It runs smoother now....You think the old gas did any harm? When the sales person first started it, it smoked very briefly. I''m not concerned as it drives ok...
