I know it has been discussed many times but I wonder if there is a consensus amoung the FTE group here... of an intake kit?
I want to make the stock one better. Has it been determined that it is better to swap it out with a cold air kit? I know cold air is a must as simply throwing a K&N at it will most likly drop economy buy sucking in even hotter air.
However I do not want to spend several hundred dollars on an item that will save me $20 a year. I would like to do this in an attempt to aid in the insane fuel prices and to suppliment to muffler delete I had done.
I know motors are all about getting more air in and more air out so I am thinking this might help. I did it on my Ranger and there was a HUGE difference when I put in the K&N and also swapped for a larger throttle body and MAFS.
I know I am fishing to make an 8000lb truck get better gas mileage but it is worth a shot with todays gas prices.
The stock filter flows exceptionally well. Anything that flows more, is letting more dirt in. Check out the tech section at the top. Look for the zoodad mod. It basicly makes the stock air box cold. Rain or snow has not affected as tested by members here. If you have any questions on the mod give Tim Lamkin a shout, he has some real detailed pics of it.
Not worth the money IMO
You would probably see more of a MPG increase with properly inflated tires and clean air, fuel filters.
Dont get me wrong, I love to mod my trucks, but when it comes to the stock intake Ford got it right.
dont worry about a "cold air" intake, the turbo will heat the air to a very high temp. ford's stock one with the zoodad (for more FLOW, not cold air) is the best way, and cheapest.
I like the AFE Stage II... If just for the ease of filter cleaning. Takes less than a minute, and no busted knuckles! It does add HP, and makes the turbo sound louder... Which is always a good thing!
I see "Truckin" Magazine did an article on the Airaid kit (sp?). They said it was worth the investment. Do you think this is just sponsored advertising at its best or is there any merit behind their claims? Does anyone have this kit on their truck? If so, what's your opinion on it? Thanks!
The ONLY system we will sell is the AFE Pro Guard Stage I or Stage II, this is the only filter that will not allow dirt into the engine. Any of the 4 layer gauze filters will let in a significant amount of dirt that I am just not comfortable with. I replaced my stock Ford filter at 8000 miles I could tell I replaced it, the stock filter is restrictive, it doesn't last as long as they reccomend for maintenance intervals and as it fills with dirt (it is VERY good at stopping dirt by the way) it gets even more restrictive over time. Give us a call if you have any questions we'll be glad to help you.
If anybody is interested, I have a AFE Stage 1 intake with a ProGuard 7 filter for sale in the classified section. Please contact me if you have any questions.
