Anybody know anything about ford HEI distributors and what it takes to use one on a 68 Ford? Are they just like a Chevy HEI, where it is a complete stand alone ignition or does it require some type of control box also?
As for whether it requires a seperate control box, the website says this:
"Includes installation instructions - Great replacement for non-HEI distributors. All you do is remove your resistor from your "points" distributor lead and run 12 volts to this coil. Yes, that simple!"
If you decide to use one let me know how it works out for you?
I was going to do it several years ago but before I got it done I switched from a 302 to 351w so the distributor wouldn’t fit. Then I just used a Pertronix to get rid of my points and loved it. They cost around $60 to $75 and install in a few minutes. I did have to add a ballast to increase my ohms.
When I got the HEI I went to a salvage yard and found a mid 70’s vehicle, pulled the Distributor, wiring harness, and ignition box. I there were 2 wires on the wiring harness that lead out side of all the components I pulled. I got a wiring diagram for the donor vehicle that told me where to connect the 2 wires. It seemed easy enough but like I said, I never completed the project.

What motor and how much $$ do you want to spend? There are plenty of electronic ignition components available, and I would search the specific engine forum for recommendations.
My 65 with a 390 runs a mid 70's Duraspark distributor with a GM HEI control module (elimintates teh associated Duraspark brain box) with an 80's Ford TFI coil. Cost me about $40 to put together with salvage yard and new parts...
Cool cool, just basically trying to keep the price down right now. I had a complete MSD ignition, billet dist., blaster2 and 6AL box, but it all got stolen. Along with asorted other parts it is part of the reason why I have to start all over.
I just had 2, yes I repeat two of thise Petronix kits burn up on me. One lasted almost 2.5 years, the other one crank..... Wasnt there fault though. Through burning two up, and burning up 140 dollars, I found out that my coil was bad... So now I bought another set from local shop in town cause I really just want to get it running, that was 120 dollars.. Coil.. 10.. Go figure.. I like the electronic points though. Easy install, easy maintanence!
After using a few different electronic ignitions over the years, and reading thoughts from folks like Smokey Yunick on how important a GOOD ignition system is, I installed a DUI electronic ignition. It uses stock HEI parts, has sealed bearings. It works great- starts faster than Fords Duraspark. I needed a 1 inch tall carb spacer to keep my fuel temp down, which in the end sets the air cleaner up high enough to clear the large HEI distributor cap. You only route ONE wire to the distributor, two wires if you use a tach. Yes, the DUI was spendy, but I spent that much over the years anyhow trying this and that.
