352 v 390

I have a 67 F250 CS that a recently bought. I don't think it has the stock 352 in it. I was told that the 352 and 360/390 are the same block. How can I tell the difference. I am pretty sure I have a 360 or 390. I have a 8 bolt Edelbrock intake manifold. Can some one help me find out?

With some Ford engines the only way to tell the difference for sure is measuring the stroke. I know 100% for the 240/300 six's that is the only way. With the FE's it may not be all in stroke difference, there may be several variations with the same stroke and a different bore. You only mentioned three of them. There are a few others (variations) as well. Hopefully someone with some specifics will chime in and help us out.

i thought 66 was the last year for the 352 so you should have a 360 or 390 but all fe enignes look the same on the outside. 332,352,360,390,410,427,428 then there is the 330,359,361,391 ft engine used in medium duty trucks.

360 and 352 have the same stroke, 390 is 1/4 inch longer. You can easily measure your stroke by pulling a spark plug. The differance between a 352 and 360 is the bore, which would require pulling a head to measure.

332 = 4.00"Bore X 3.30" Stroke
352 = 4.00"Bore X 3.50" Stroke
360 = 4.05"Bore X 3.50" Stroke
390 = 4.05"Bore X 3.784" Stroke

There is a FAQ at the head of the FE forum which will give you more details.

The 352 was available in the 65, 66 and 67 trucks. In 68 they went to the 360 and an optional 390. The 360 and 390 share the same block, as in 4.05" bore, the difference is the crank. The 352 used a 4.00" bore block, so while the 352 and 390 are FE motors, the block bore is different. The 360 basically used the 352 crank and 390 block.... If the motor is all factory stock, my money is on the 352. You need to test the stroke, that will get you 352/360 or 390 but to find out if it's 352 or 360, you will need to know the bore. Check out the crew on the "FE Engine forum" a little further down the forum list for "how-to's".

Welcome aboard! --Mike

If you end up having the 352, they are a tough block with thick cylinder walls. Bore the block 0.05 over to get a stock 4.05 inch 390 bore, then get a 390 crank and rods. Now you have a nice 390 with the extra torque of the longer crank stroke. Buy the C7AE-B connecting rods and put ARP bolts on them. These rods are the same forging as used on the 427, just had smaller 3/8 diameter bolts. The aftermarket bolts will make them bullet proof. If you have a 390 you could put a 428 crank in it to gain even more zip. I just have fun tinkering I guess.
