All an aluminum head gives you, other than weight reduction, is the fact that it is much easier to port and it's ability to tolerate maybe 0.5 more compression than it's iron equivalent. On an engine as heavily supercharged as the one we're didcussing it probably wouldn't matter in the slightest.
Whats amazing to me is how many people think that adding a turbo is so simple....
They don't consider all that is involved, Controls for the turbo itself Ignition changes Not to mention prepping the engine properly.........
Add one to an engine with 20,000 miles on it Or to an engine not built for it and it will not be a reliable ..
Also the IDIOTS who wanna Know ""Will the one I got from A 19XX Ford/Chevy/Toyota/Etc/etc work on my truck""
Anyone ever see a overspeeding compressor Wheel break apart and come THROUGH the Compressor housing and the Hood too???
Not to mention the extra stuff that was sucked (or Blown) into the engine, Destroying it too.....
i also wanted to add turbo but its not that easy so i decided if i ever have $30 laying around i might the fake turbo whistle u place in the exhaust pipe to make it sound like one but i have heard that they reduce hp?
so from the bottem up, how do you figure would be the best way to build a turbo six (w/some kind of budget in mind) and i more or less meant the aftermarket aluminum heads because they would (hopefully) flow better.

I would be VERY, VERY pleased with 300 HP and 350 Ft Lbs of torque in a RELIABLE 4.9.....I do not think that 5-600 (Although possible) would be a good choice for a daily driver.

Originally posted by Idiomaticman well, still guys. if you have a EFI 300, all you really need is a idnition that will retard spark, some bigger injectors so you dont run lean, and a blow through turbo out of a deisel of about the same displacement, i chose a deisel because it will spool up muck sooner, a deisel runs about the same rpm as a 300.\

The only problem with that is that diesels put out quite a bit more exhaust. the compression on those things is nuts.
The cheapest horspower gain is to hook a large shop vac to your carb with it set on blow-when you've got the accelorator to the floor turn it on. Careful of your pistons, they melt easy
i had oil get in my intake at 8lbs boost
have some problems to fix new pistons
and clean up on ports and chambers .
computer needs replacement also.
hope to be fixed by spring
Perhaps you could list you pic's site - Yahoo??? I think you listed it in your 96 Turbo post. I'm sure some folks would appreciate seeing a turbo'd 300... Bummer 'bout the down time.
And someone had mentioned using the 302 because it would be cheaper? It costs alot more to make the 5.0 push that kind of power. Rods, pistions, a new head for starters. The 4.9 is all forged, block, rods, and pistions.
The 300 is not all forged. The only forged parts in the entire bottom end are the rods, but all factory rods are forged with the exception of powdered metal rods in some late model stuff. The 302 is cheaper to make big power with, there is no way around it.
And unlike the most V8s that have 5 bearings the 4.9 has 8.
You should go back and count again, there are only 7.
ahhh stop your bickering!!! this thread was ment to give us every day drivers (you know the ones that dont got 75000 buck and dont need the dam 600hp) an idea of how we could install a turbo in our sixes relatively cheap and as easy as possible but so far no ones been very helpful with that except E350turbo (sorta)... sorry but you kinda lost me some where after the first 5 words i think 350 ft lbs or tq would be plenty for hiting the trail and (i donno what to call it but we find stretches of land with lose gravel or just packed dirt with no plant lift and have lil spinout, 360 contests; see how much dirt we can throw up ect..) every now and then would be great im mean it dose fine now but with a little more power that would be DAM NICE. Thanks 77crew I had a bad day and "dont hurt me" just made me smile
I vote for flushing this sticky and starting another, or preferably using what little factual info is here and starting a Turbo FAQ and adding to it. The useful info that IS here is now burried deep in heresay and nonsence (like this post ).
