I hate snakes & lizards, they give me the creeps so this story really freaked me out. People have been buying these Pythons from Asia and once they start growing to the point that they are dangerous the owner just drops them off in the Florida Everglades. The Python reproduces hundreds of offspring that end up being 10 - 20 ft. in length. Now these Pythons are going 1 on 1 with the native alligators.
There was another incounter in the Everglades about 2 years ago where an alligator and a Python where locked on each other for over 24 hours. The gator had the snakes body in it's jaws. The snake was wrapped around the gator trying to squeeze it. After awhile the snake was just being dragged by the gator. Then the gator opened it's mouth to take a break before dinner, and the snake swam away?? Another time my buddy was headed through Evergaldes National park at 4:30 AM to go fishing. It is 45 miles from the front gate to Flamingo boat ramp. About 5 miles from the ramp he saw something across the road. He thought it was a fallen tree, then it started to move. It ended up being a Pyhton that streched across both lanes. He jumped out of the truck as it was headed into the woods and he said it sounded like a group of men tromping threw the woods, just crushing all the dead branches and debri as it was moving. He estimated the thing at about 16 feet long. He told the Ranger on duty who said he should of run it over. But hitting a snake that big at 55MPH with your boat in tow was not a good idea.

And running over a snake that large in your truck probably wouldn't even be enought to **** it off- if the snake even noticed it. I've run over 6 foot rattlers in my car before and it didn't even phaze them.
I saw this thread and thought maybe there should be a poll... Which is better entertainment Monty Python or Burt Reynolds in "Gator"?
Of course I scrapped that idea after reading the posts. Scary stuff.
We visited the glades when I was a kid. I don't think I'll be taking my kids out there on an air boat.
It is only a problem if they let it be a problem. Just put a bounty of $200+ on each snake six feet or longer and the gators will take care of the rest.
A bounty is a good idea. I think $200 is a little steep, since it would be taxpayers' money, but certainly something could be settled on. Secondly, if the FWC has trapped 150 pythons in the past year, why didn't they destroy them? A trapping program and a shoot-to-kill python policy would have at least some impact on the numbers until a better plan could be devised.
This morning after posting, got in the Ford work truck and a guy said that he mows the grass at a boat ramp off of Alligator Alley, Interstate 75 in the Everglades. He said he ran a python over with the front wheels of his tractor. It wrapped around the front of the tractor. Then it eventually died from being run over. After he made sure it was dead. He pulled it out to the parking lot and it measured 17'-3" long. It is becoming a big problem.

I think that if the gator was full-grown the outcome would be different. That is just a whole lot of teeth and claws and jaws for a snake to deal with. I owned a 14 foot reticulated Python in college, awesome animal-but I don't think it would be much of a threat to a gator the same size. I also had an 8 foot Ball Python, and an 8.5 foot red tail boa Constrictor. The ball python is quite a bit more stout than the Reticulated. Stronger. But still no match for the explosive energy of an American Alligator.
i live on marco island which is only a couple min drive to the everglades. just N of marco i was coming home at about 2am and there was about a 12' python in the middle of the road right in front of a high dollar gated community

Probably likes those little dogs
A bounty might be a good idea, but better still doesn't some company out there make something from snake-skin and wouldn't mind the python markings?
I'd think a snake that big would be good for lots of boots, hats, belts, etc.
Hmm... maybe we should export them to a country where snake-meat is a delicasy?
Either way, make it worth someone's time, there's gonna be lots of people in the Everglades walking around with shotguns
