Well, I was heading on I-70 West yesterday afternoon in the Lincoln. I was about 30 miles west of Columbus, Ohio heading up to Rossberg for the big dirt track late model race at Eldora. I was going through a construction zone where they were doing work on the shoulder I believe. As I was passing a tractor trailer I suddenly felt a little crowded. I had just looked up into his spotter mirror on the right front corner of his cab and I could see his entire windshield so I knew he could see me. Evidently he didn't bother looking in his spotter because he started coming over to my driverside door. I moved over a little to the right thinking he'd seen me by now and get back into his lane. No such luck. He just kept coming. I had thought of blowing my horn, then thought that even if he would have heard it he might have freaked out at how close he was and cut it hard left and the trailer would have come over and whipped me. So I decided to ride it out on the shoulder, only to look up and see a big metal construction ahead sign coming at me rapidly, along with the big rig still coming over. I knew if I'd hit the brakes I'd have a bad night in store due to the loose cinders on the shoulder so I got as close to the trailer as I could without going under and hoped for the best. I barely cleared the sign with my already damaged from a previous adventure in california right side and slowed down to a stop so I could get back on the Interstate and on my way. The people behind me must have been amazed at my driving prowess. I just wonder, what if there'd been a concrete divider or a piece of machinery there or something other than that sign? Maybe I should have bought an Excursion or Navigator.
This is why I drive trucks. On I40, a couple of years ago, I was forced off the road when driving my Linclon Mkviii piece of junk bit of rubbish, total waste of money heap of #### car. The truck that forced me off the road did exactly the same thing, and unfortunately I did not let him hit the piece of junk lincoln. I hate that tatty, badly made piece of junk. I am waiting until it is paid off, then I will take it to a crusher, and have fun...
If there had been a concrete divider in your way, you probably wouldn't be here. (He says, crassly)
Yep, that's me! "Captain Obvious"...
Ya gotta wonder what the trucker was thinking, changing lanes in a construction zone in the first place. A bit late for that tho...
Best advice I can offer is to always drive as if the rest of the people on the road are brain-dead and trying to kill you! That all by itself has saved my butt more times than I can remember.
As far as being alongside a truck through a section like that - Myagi said it best: "No be there..."
I usually have a good feel around the big rigs. I communicate with them by actions and I can usually tell what they're planning on doing before they take action. I was passing him on the right because he was in the left lane and going slower than I was. My intention was to get passed him before he got over. Like I said, I felt like I was being crowded. If he had signaled first I would have been able to get out of there because of the big flashing amber light that was about six feet in front of me would have let me know. He checked his side mirror, saw it was clear, and came over. It wasn't like I was riding in his blind spot. If you're looking in a mirror on a vehicle and you can see the driver, he can see you. I have nothing against truckers. For the most part they're a great bunch of guys that would do almost anything for even a stranger, and they do have a hectic job to do, but some of them, it's just a little crazy out there some time. If I had hit a concrete barrier, I think I would have made it out, the Lincoln LS is a highly safe vehicle. I would have felt it no doubt, and probably been a little more angry, I guess the whole thing that upsets me is the fact that he either didn't check the spotter mirror, or just didn't care. Hopefully it was the first, and he saw me once I went off the road, and started paying more attention to his mirrors after that. Sorry guys, just had to vent a little.
