When they (ford) were working on the new GT, they had the basic engine already in one of their mustang "mules". The thing handled like a pig due to the weight, but the engine was awesome. They made a few tweaks to the computer and put it in the GT. I think a lot of the spy photos you're seeing are more than likely just the test vehicle for the engine. No matter how many dyno runs you do in a lab somewhere, they will never equal real world miles. This is where the engineers went wrong with the 6.0. They never road tested the engine with a real load, in the real world filthy air.
If you remember it was only what 6 months from announce to relase? Then there were a lot of failures. IH had used the engine for a year or so before Ford purchased it for the SD truck. This really wasn't enough time to get a controller program written, get the ford intake and exhaust worked out, and make it reliable. I'm sure they factored in that when they released it, but we'll never know. Anytime when release a new engine for a model year, the consumer usually becomes a guinea pig... All of the big 3 are bad about this, look at the problems in the early 4.8 and 5.3 GM motors, how about the duramax and cummins teething issues? It's not really assuming anything, it's looking at the past and learning from it. Ford had been one to get a body style first, then once the chassis is good they'll introduce a new engine. This works well, but occasionally they are pressed to release a new engine too soon. That is what causes problems.
I think the chassi for the 05 and 06 was designed for the new 07 truck and that they are trying to ease us into the new body style with a grill change (05-06) before they change the whole truck (kind of like keeping the old f150 as a heritage f150 just in case the new bodystyle tanked)
I don't think they did the 'Heritage' just incase the new truck tanked. They spent millions re-doing the truck, and made sure it wouldn't tank. The response from the auto shows was impressive as well. The only reason there was a 'Heritage' truck, was so that the rest of the old style could be sold off. Stocks don't just evaporate when new line of trucks is introduced.
I have seen quite good research into it, but those in the lower socio-economic scale are more likely to be loyal than those up the top of it, so making a few cheap models keeps people happy, and keeping these people happy also keeps the used market strong for vehicles from the same manufacturer.
my dealer told me the new motor would be available as soon as december/January in the 2006 model truck. I think that is great, now when I get me a 07 they will have already worked out some of the bugs.
