First the particulars, 71 F-100 motor from a 71 mustang 2bbl carb auto-trans (no kickdown). Pertronix installed (nice improvement) new coil.
The problem. I drive about 25 miles home from work. Half way home the truck starts cutting out when I gas it. It acts like its choking out but the carb seems to be working fine. Truck idles fine only after driving for about 15 min and you get into the pedal that it acts up.
Possible solutions: New plug wires (going in this weekend) New plugs (see wires)?
One person told me to replace the ignition switch. Due to the ford switch having a problem with over-heating and messing with the spark??? I have never heard that one but sounds reasonable.
Ok....finally my experience might help someone.....I had similaer probs and went through all osrts of checking only to find in the end that the "pick up tube" inside the gas tank had a couple of tiny holes in it....when the gas got to a certain level, it would start sucking air and the truck would intermittantly run like it was out of gas. May not be your prob....but I hope it helps someone!!!
Definitley sounds like the accelerator pump. After you replace be careful to not tighten the screws too much. The alum accelerator pump cover can easily warp. This should solve your problem, unless you have a loose or ignition wire.
If it was the acc pump wouldnt it act up in the first 25 miles too? they usually either work or they dont. If it feels like it is "choking", it is getting too much gas, not enough. Any black smoke when it runs like this? make sure the choke is fully open when motor is warmed up. check float level, fuel filter, etc. usually its always a minor problem. i have also had a clogged screen on my tank pickup, and in one case, one of my saddle tanks had some round rubber ***** rolling around in it and occaisionally would plug the fuel pickup tube until i shut the motor off and it would fall off. dont ask me how these got in there! Former owner was a Kool-aid drinker.
No smoke and it runs fine till it warms up real good. Choke seems to be working fine. I may end up replacing the carb altogether. This was not a problem when I first got the truck. I'm wondering if the Pertronix unit is causing a problem. It didn't do this before that unit went in but it didn't do it right after I installed it either.
If it isn't blowing smoke, and it doesn't smell rich, then I am going to bet it is the carb. I am also willing to bet that is could be a clogged filter but more then likely a sticking accelerator pump. I had the same problem with mine and when I replace the accelerator pump it went away.
