I like the Maglites, mine are beat to **** and still function well, except one that went for a night in some hot springs, the light worked all night but by the time I got home 2 days later the reflective coating on the reflector came off.

Anything LED will work a long time. The LED lights don't make much of a beam tho so they are worthless for distance.

There are several shake up lights but they are LED lights. Some people really like them.

A 6 or 4 battery mag like is by far the best flash light ever invented. It is indistructable. I have put it through dozens and dozens of wire mesh windows in abandon insane assylms, beat the hell out of old junk cars, broken off tree branches, just waiting for the day i have to hit some one with it. Its like a weapon and a flashlight at the same time. Deffinitly no alternative.

nothing quite like a be-good-stick and a flashlight in an attractive anodized package.

not sure I want to know WHY you were putting them through wire mesh windows though.

2nd the Mag-lite for a great all around flashlight.

Pelican makes a fine Xenon 3xC cell is unreal bright (blindingly so), waterproof to beyond drowning depth, and safe for explosive atmospheres (really a good call for bilge inspections).

Petzl is the nuts for head-lamps.

If I had to own one flashlight, it would be the Pelican and a .45 1911.

MAG lights all the way, and not the cheap Wal Mart ones made in Zing Fong, Long Won, or anywhere along those lines.

Only one word neccessary...

SUREFIRE.

I've got 6 of them. Absolutely indestructable, very versatile, well made, totally water and shock-proof- unbelievably bright with a very crisp, white, evenly spread beam.

Only downfall is the fact that they are expensive, and they eat batteries for lunch.

sure fire...i have had two maglites go bad after just being dropped and no it wasn't the bulb...even though they have a lifetime warranty i called and itwasn't worth what they wanted for shipping and to "look" at it...i consider them disposable...cheap at costco...maybe why police departments around here dont use them anymore...you know its real easy after you develope a good product with good quality and reputation to cheapen it up and still sucker people in...

Mag lite. I swear by them. I've got a 2D that I keep in my truck, a 4D that is in the house for general needs, and camping, and my mom has a 2C that she has in her truck for emergencies. we swear by those things. I beat the living crap out of my maglites, and they're the ONLY ones that will hold up to my abuse, and still work, plus double as a really nice night stick.

good self defence tool if need be, as well as light source. love them things, reliable as gravity. I've used nothing but Mag Lites for the last 17 years. they're rugged, and well engineered for long years of abusive service. I will not trade mine for anything short of sunlight.

I WILL NOT use any other brand, since my mag lites have been very good to me over the years, and I've been not so good to them lol. IMO, the army should ditch the plastic things they're using, and go to mag lites for their uses, they'd have a multi purpose tool which in military service, can be VERY helpful.
