I have to go with the maglite here as well. I have a 3-d one that I bought 11 years ago. I needed a light to do security checks and as an attitude adjuster if need be, and it was needed once. Nothing like walking around a corner of the school I was working at and seeing a guy trying to break into the building with his mean-assed dog growling and biting me. I got chewed and punched, but they didn't get away without some pop-knots all over them. I have abused the holy crap out of this thing and it still lights up just fine, dents and all.

Best flashlight= the one with batteries in it that work.

Shake lights= meant for emergency lighting only, as in leave them all over the place and use one to find your real flashlight.

Mag light so the the best in my personal use. I've had brighter but none as durable.

I wanna CSI light but way too much $.

I think you can get an LED kit rom BassPro, I'll check later for ya.

I have 2 AA maglites, one in my truck and one somewhere else in my truck or my house.
I also have a 3-D cell mag in my truck but the batteries are dead.
One of my favorites though is a head mounted light that I use whenever I need to keep my hands free, I wish I coudl attach a wire and push-presure switch and run it down the inside of my shirt sleeve to my wrist somewhere so I don't have to reach up to my head to turn it on or off. It uses 2 AA's and is surprisingly bright! Also great for climbig into and out of a deerstand in the dark, or using to be able to see and shoulder a firearm in the dark.

CSI flashlight= From the TV series CSI. Powerful and yet small flashlight that's very expensive from what I've found.

Since we're posting about bright subjects.......

I'm trying to find some info on a lantern that was given to me about 30+ years ago.

I tried to google a search, but no luck.

It's roughly 6" X 6" and about 4-5 " deep.

It uses 2-6 volt lantern batteries; has a 6 volt seal beam.

It's bright yellow and has a special attachment on the back to hang on it's mating half of the bracket.

I've seen them on everything from subs to industrial rigs.

The front cover is attached with 4 brass machine screws to access the sealed beam and batteries.

The handle is also attached on top with 6 brass screws to access the toggle switch.

Anyone know about this type of lantern?

Not much good for self-defence, but a cheap 3-LED/3-AAA headlamp is more useful than I could have imagined. Small enough to keep in a pocket or pack, hands-free for working on or under the truck. About as bright as moonlight for walking, with a wide beam so you can see where you're going. Battery life is excellent: you should be able to hike all night for two nights in a row on a single set of batteries.

I've got an old REI headlamp that I use for camping, such as to set up camp, and it's great.

Hands free. Try to set up a tent with a flashlight in one hand.

I also use an old Tekna 4aa for camp use.

It's the one that has the battery life monitor on the barrel (green-yellow-red).

Certainly sounds like a marine application light. Any mfg. name stamped or etched on it, inside or outside.

Gerber or Pelican for outdoors, MagLite for everything else. Bigfoot for self-defense (hey, he looks like a dog, ya know?)

KenB, there's the letters "US" embossed on the upper left hand corner on the front.

On the back is embossed with:

MANUFACTURED BY
THE ROFLAN COMPANY
TOPSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS

Edit: KenB, thanks for the your word "Marine application".

I just found a link on it.

http://www.jaymoulding.com/emergencylighting.html

Again, thanks.
