Question Guage Install Questions

I recently purchased a tri-pod pillar with autometer ultra-light boost, pyrometer, and tranny temp. guages. I was wondering where and how you guys decided to mount those guages. I want to get them hooked up this weekend so I can use my new chip. Thanks a bunch guys.

do you mean the order in which they are in the pod or how to install them?

The EGT probe: Post-Turbo just tap into the down pipe just after the turbo. Pre-turbo I believe you tap into the driver's side manifold in the right runner or where all four converge. The boost gauge: Get an AIH delete plug with a boost line tap, tap into the X pipe, or T into the MAP sensor line. As for the tranny temp you will either tap into the tranny pan to insert the mechanical plug or if you have an electric sender just tap into the tranny cooler wire(not really sure just going on what I have read for this one). If anyone can add anything t this please do. I think I have everything but I'm sure there are other ways. Hope this helps!

ok.. here goes... first the boost gauge... if you have the Intake Air Heater, and you probably do.. get the replacement plug that goes in the threaded hole after you take it out... get it from blackclouddiesel.com.. they have a plug that has the hookup nipple for the hose that goes to the boost gauge... this is soooo easy to do it is silly to do it any other way... i think they also make a pigtail that you plug into the wiring for the IAH since it is not used anymore that will keep you from getting error codes after you remove this heater..

next... the tranny gauge... most people install this in a test port that is already in the tranny... there is a plug threaded into the tranny on the driver's side just above the place where the second bolt from the front goes up through the tranny pan... look up the side of the tranny in the area of that bolt and you will see it... it may be a bear to get out, but the sender for most tranny gauges will thread right into it... do NOT use teflon tape to seal up the sender when you install it...! you won't need it, and the sender might ground the circut through those threads.. if you use tape, you won't ground your sender and your gauge might not work...

last, the pyro...! this one takes a little patience... follow all directions to the letter, (this goes for the other gauges too..!), i put my probe in the exhaust manifold on the driver's side, (pre-turbo since that's what my gauge was setup for, if your "redline" starts at 1200 degrees or above, you have a pre-turbo egt gauge), i drilled the hole that was required in order to tap the hole with the proper thread size and type, (check your instructions, most call for NPT threads so make sure you have the right tap..!), then i tapped the hole in the manifold, slowly winding in the tap a little ways, then backing it out, then winding it in a little further, then backing it out, etc, till it was fully tapped... i did this with the engine running..! i started the engine cold, and worked quickly and carefully without any gloves..! it only got a little hot trying to hold on to the tool right at the end... when your engine idles there is almost no fuel being injected into the motor, so it doesn't heat up very fast and you have plenty of time to take your time and do this right the first time...!

other than some issues i had because the instructions that came with my gauges were very confusing, and even wrong in a couple of cases, i got my gauges in and working in short order and i did the entire install myself.... the only really bad thing with my install was that i don't have a garage and it rained for 2 days, before, during, and after my install... i worked on my gauges in 3 different stages and i was crawling around in 3 inches of mud the whole time...! i hope your install is better than mine..! let me know how you do..!

sorry for the long post, but when you ask me to tell a tale of woe... you had better be prepared for a comprhensive story..!

We have some good information on our installation shhet page that will be able to help you out. Not sure what brand of gauges you have. The instructions are for ISSPRO gauges, bit if all you need to do is connect the boost gauge they'll be a help. Here's the link. http://www.dieselmanor.com/diy/PSD3-gauge/PSD3gauge-p1.htm

Click on page 2 for the Map sensor location. You'll need to use a "T" fitting for the MAP line.

to blow any metal shavings out of the exhaust instead of into the engine.

exactlly right..! drilling the hole makes some pretty good sized chips, and tapping the hole makes those fine shavings... none of which you want running through your turbo... there are different ways of doing this job, i read on here someone posted this as one other way to do the job and i liked the idea... it seemed to make a lot of sense... it worked pretty well to... i can't be absolutly sure but i don't think ANY chips of shavings made it into the exhaust manifold...
