Hey guys, i have a 300 inline six on a '84 f-150. It has an automatic tranny, 2wd, no a/c, single barrel carb.
Here's the deal, i just put in performance hedders, changed the carburetor(single barrel, still), and took off the egr valve vaccum line, air pump, catalytic converter, thermactor system.
The problem is that now, at mid range revs(2000-3000), in every gear, the truck hesitates or jumps very severly when i lower my acceleration. It kind of feels like a vaccum leak. I know for a fact that i dont have any intake or exhaust leaks. And i dont see where i could have any vaccum leaks, i took most of that stuff off.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?? Or is this typical behavior for hedders?
I am having the same sorta problem only I am in a completely different boat though, I just put fuel injection on and my advance is screwed up I think, anyhow I am wondering if you need to adjust your timing a little bit, that and the inline 6 isnt a real revver, it usually tops out around 3500-4000, just my thoughts, also may be a fuel filter or fuel pump or something to do with your vaccum advance.

Can you explain the Jump, do you mean you get a rev surge?
You might try getting a can of carb cleaner, like B-12, and spray it around the carb with short, tiny squirts Especially at the bottom of the carb barrel. The single barrel is bad about wear on the shaft of the bottom butterfly and on movement of the accellerator will suck air in around the shaft, this acts very much like a vacumn leak but varies with the movement of the throttle. Easy to check to see if there is play when you grab it and see if there is play there.

My pickup is a 78 that i converted to fuel injection so the carb isnt an issue for me. What happens is when I give it gas really quick it just totally cuts out and starts sputtering and then it will slowly catch and revv to about 3000 and then it just cuts out again and doesnt wanna go, seems like the timing isnt advancing or something. I am going to check my fuel pressure and test the regulator and air MAF(if I even have one) to see what i can find..Hope this answered your questions.
