Will a 2 to 4 barrel manifold and carb upgrade help decrease the blowby on my 292?
I have added a PCV valve and tried several ways off routing things but nothing seems to work. I had things hooked up once in a creative way that helped but it created a whistling vaccum from my oil dipstick and stopped the rear seal leak I had, but it was definetly not the way it was meant to be
I have asked on the 48 - 60 Forum and gotten some great help, but have recently been looking thru tons of old threads and have gotten a few new ideas to try from this forum.
My HOPE is that if I increase to a 4 barrel carb from the 2 barrel thats on it, that maybe due to increased vaccum or some other reason maybe better compatibility, that the change will help the blowby from the oil filler tube? Oh yeah not much comes out the road draft tube, could that be an indication of the problem?
Any help would be greatly appriciated
There is no reason a properly sized PCV setup wont work either. The key is to size the system for an engine with roughly the same displacement. There is nothing valuable about the generic valve covers so just follow thru as done on a modern engine. I would not go over a 3/8" crankase return line and most likely use a 1/2" vacuum line. Of course the valve is proper and installed spring toward vacuum? There are many PCV designs and valves.
Now, if your head oil (return but a function of input flow also)passages are mostly blocked you wont be able to use a PCV effectively. What do things look like under the covers and also in the lifter valley?
If sludge is blocking everything and top end oil flow is at an absolute minimum then you may very well be pressurizing the pan and the only release is thru the stink pipe.
Something I read somewhere just popped into my gray matter. Are you using gas line hose? They have a bad habit of collapsing where bends are involved and under heat. Use reinforced hose.
I dont know the year of your engine but spacers that can take a fitting are available for the modern base carbs and there are 2" spacers being made for the 3 bolt 94 style carb.
You reffered to the 3/8 crankcase return line, where is it routed so I can make sure I have it right. I might have fuel or some other kind of non reinforced hoses but they are all new and I doubt they are any sharp enough bends to restrict the hoses, But I will check and try to correct anything thats looks close.
I had read alot in old threads about the head oil passage problem but did not make a connection to my problem, but now that you mention it, it makes sense and sounds like a strong possibility. Although everything looked good when I swapped out the valve covers. I will pull the valve covers again and check the oil flow. If it looks blocked, the threads I read didn't seem to optamistic for this problem other than the temp oil lines to the rockers, and that still wouldn't solve any blowby or back pressure problems. I have pictures in my gallery of my engine it would help. Is it possible to effectivly unplug these passages? And how? I read about the different thing you can add to the oil to help clean it, Mystery oil, Kerosene, Trans fluid. I am even getting rid of the new Fram oil filter i just put in and am gonna try a Motorcraft filter reading y-blocks loose pressure with fram.
This has been a Major pain in my butt but im sure learning alot of great stuff about my Y-block, just trying to solve this one problem. Its Allllmost worth it.
Thanks again, Larry
I am now rebuilding a 312 for Brutus, All my struggles with my 292 only served to catch my attention to the Y-Block. I will update my progress, Thanks for the input.
