removing column shifter?

removing column shifter?
How do I pull my shifter on the column? (automatic) Do I just pull the pin, or do I need to pull the steering wheel and take the collar off as well? I got a nice chrome shifter at the boneyard, but it was already off, laying on the floor. I've pulled the steering wheel before (to change turn signal switch) but didn't get down to the collar. Can anyone offer any pointers?
