OK! Here Goes!
I have an '85 F-150 4WD, with AT and a 5.0 out of an '84 Mustand GT with 33x12.50x15x10 tires and wheels. I have just installed, out of the box, a new Edelbrock Performer 289 intake, an Edelbrock 2" spacer,(for added torque and horsepower in the low to mid rpm's), and a Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm Performer Carb., a new high flow reverse water pump, along with a new aluminum radiator. Here's what I need to know... I want to take off the standard alternator and replace it with one from a '95 Mustang, I beleive it's what they call a one wire alternator. Anyway, I need to how to wire up the newer one to the older wiring harness or maybe just where the wiress hook up. The standard alt. is an 60 amp and the newer one is either 130 or 140 amps. Can Anyone Help with the wiring?
If your truck now has a seperate regulator, the wiring should be hooked up like this.
If the new alternator has an internal regulator, it should be hooked up like this.
The only wire you should need is the lightgreen/red. All the other wires in the newer diagram I would run new, and abandon or take out all the other old wires.

Im adding a 88 alternator internal regulator to my 79 f150 setup, but since i unhooked the old alt harness, i have NO POWER what so ever to the truck. The bottom diagram makes perfect sense as far as what to do with the newer alt. wires, but i know i need to do something with the wires that are left at the harness. Can you possibly be able to help out there with a diagram of some kind? Theres a harness going to the old alternator that plugs into 2 little plugs on the inner fender on my 79, i think 5 wires, that appear to be right in the middle of the main system and the solenoid/regulator. the 79 has a gauge, the 88 f250 2wd had a gauge, engine is a 460. i have what you said, one wire to the solenoid and a red/green wire for gauge i believe, but yeah, its the truck side i need to really deal with in concern to the harness being dead ended from removing the origional alternator harness. Im left with 2 plugs, i believe they are 5 wires in total, that i believe run the trucks main power to the key.
The large output wire coming out of the alternator is hooked up to the main power wires in the truck's harness near the starter relay. The diagram for the old seperate regulator shows the output wire going straight to the starter relay(which is the bat +). But in reality, some harnesses are different, and there may be one wire coming off the starter relay +, but then this wire splits later on, to the alt, the feed for the fuse box, etc.
So what I would do is look for some heavy wires(I believe one of them may be yellow) over near the starter relay, that are not connected. If you do find a yellow wire that is connected one way or the other to the battery +, then look for little colored rubber things in the wires. These are fusible links. If one of these links is burnt out inside, then that will kill the whole truck, or whole sections of the truck.
The truck has an external regulator and the newer alt has an internal one. I guess that I forgot to mention that earlier.

So find the lightgreen red on the old regulator, snip it and hook it up to the lightgreen/red wire connection on the new alternator.
If you had a little bit of the harness from the newer truck or car, then you could use some of it to hook the new alt up to the battery. That would be the white/black jumper wire, the yellow/white sensing wire, and the two large black/orange output wires with the fusible link.

There is a big yellow wire, (looks like maybe a 10 gauge wire), coming off the back of the alt. The wiring harness that plugs into the alt. has three wires on it. There's a white wire with a black stripe on that plugs back into the alt., then there's a orange wire with a light blue stripe on it, and there's a light green wire with a red stripe on it. Oh by the way, thanks for the diagrams! The only thing is the internal one shows two orange wires and this one has only one. I guess it'll still work? I'll find out later today.
