Question Coil + Wire questions...

Hi All,

With the FORD factory coil adapter...there is a wire that connects to the " + " on the coil. The coil adapter reads "BATT". It is part of the three wire male plug that connects the oil pressure wire and the thermostat wire.

What does this coil " + " wire actually do? Is it a constant 12v "hot" wire? Or is it a "key on" live wire?

I am thinking it is a "key on"...but want to make certain.

Thanks for your help!

It is key on power, but it's not 12 volts unless you have a TFI ignition. It's a feed from the ignition switch with a special resistance wire.

Question

Thanks for the response!

If resistance (mechanism) wire is removed, then would it become 12v?

Is this wire needed if the factory coil has been removed and replaced with a D.U.I. setup? Does it have any effect on the two other wires in the male three plug?

Thanks again!

You will have to read the instructions carefully, or call them. But is this the Ford dist with the GM HEI module in it? If so, you need to cut the resistance wire out or run a new wire, because I do know the GM HEI module requires 12 volts. It also requires a fairly hefty wire too. I would run 12 guage.

If you want to cut the resistance wire out, the safest thing to do is go all the way back to the ignition switch, since I do not know where the special resistance wire begins and ends.

Question Include...No Harm?

Yes, it is the Ford dizzy with the GM HEI coil module. I already did the "single" wire hook-up to a "key on" source for the dizzy...and am good to go there. The wire that came with the kit was 10 gauge. I also installed a fuse link between the "key on" source and the dizzy for good measure. When I called performance distributors...they said the setup only draws 3amps...so I installed a 10amp fuse.

My only real concern: Can I include or ignore the original "key on" wire??? If I include it with a full 12v...will it fry my truck??? If I ignore it...will it kill something else???

I am thinking...I can include it and all will be ok (no harm will come of it). What do you all think?

Also...nothing in the instructions regarding that wire. Very simply it states, it is ok to remove the DuraSpark ignition. But the question is...what does the DuraSpark ignition entail??? 1. ignition box (just unplugged); 2. coil (physically removed); 3. dizzy (physically removed); So...they are all gone.

Thanks tons!!!

Another concern, is if I leave the original "key-on" wire alone...will it effect my temp and oil gauges? In my first post, these are the three wires coming off that three male connector.

Thanks again...for all the help!!!

Ok, I think I get the jist of what you want to do; eliminate as many old wires as possible, without killing something else in the process.

The 3 wire connector on the coil +. One of them is the wire from the keyswitch-not needed anymore. One wire is probably coming from the starter relay if it has two small terminals on it-not needed anymore. The other wire is a mystery. I don't know what it goes to.

Just to be safe, I would get a decent size butt connector, crimp one of the three wires into one side, and twist the other two wires together and crimp them on the other side. Then tape it up in the harness. That way everything will work as it should. I would not hook any of this to your new dist feed.

If you take the old dist system out, all you will have left is two wires going to the red and white wires on the module. I would tape these up and stick them in the harness. Everything else ought to come out with the dist and the module.
