Has anyone changed the front seal (pump seal) on their C6 transmission? I am changing the flexplate on my 460 and I want to know if I can change the leaking seal while I have the transmission out. I do have one of those crude seal pullers, as well as a set of seal installation tools. I need to know what the procedure might be, as I can't find it in my Chiltons...

As you probably already know a square fit of the seal is the way. Some of the newer transmissions call for staking the seal after installation. Not sure on yours. Might want to get that front hub bushing replaced as it is what holds everything in alignment. We take mechanical lip seals for granted, but they aren't designed to take much more than .007 out of round...Is the torque converter hub scored from the old seal? Locating the seal slightly differently may save you a rebuilt converter...

I checked the shaft, and there is no scoring or pitting whatsoever.
Smooth as silk! Question: Since you seem to know about trannys, what is it that keeps the coolant from leaking out from around the big, bolt-in main part at the front of the trans, right behind the converter? Is there a gasket on it? Just curious on that.

I always replace the front seal whenever it's exposed. Lube it up good with tranny fluid prior to assembly to keep it from burning before it gets internal lube.

Appreciate heading off on a vector. Do that myself sometimes. But let's try to stay on a straight line.
--Yes the hub bushing is directly behind the seal. If you have many miles get it replaced. Shopping is the key because unfortunately most transmission shops want to sell you much more. And typically they are the only ones that have the propoer installation drivers.
--The coolant and trans fluid happenings take place only at the radiator. The coolant never goes to the transmission.
--The bolt-in main part you mention is the pump which is heart of the transmission. It's just an engineer's nightmare of hydraulic pressure.

Sorry, but what I meant by coolant was ATF...
So, is the pump sealed into position and front side kept dry via a gasket??? I am still looking for an answer to this question...
I have everything back together and things are working beautifully, but I would still like to know. Thanks!
