I'll be using Secret Audio, it will work perfectly with my Glide Engineering seat. You only have to buy the right stuff once.

I would definitely hear the Secret Audio stuff before I paid that much for it. The lack of real specs on the head unit is suspect. It looks like junk from here. Don't need any specs to tell the speakers and amp are low end. I highly doubt it would meet the criteria laid out by lt56 in the original post.

I know that wasn't very constructive. But I have listened to too many of the systems designed to properly fit the dash of old muscle cars. Without exception it was P.O.S. internals in a package that looked and fit like old stock system. I haven't heard the Secret Audio system either. My first choice is mid-level Alpine or Eclipse concealed in the glovebox. You won't regret either of those options. There are other good choices.

Question

thanks, D, I liked the secret audio because of it's remote mount capabilities (which I have not been able to find anywhere else) I don't have the room for a standard in-dash system. PS, we are talking about the system from customautosound, right?

'fenders is right [again] as far as I am concerned. I have owned two Custom Auto Sound units. The first one I bought about 7 years ago because they claimed it a custom fit for my 46 dash [plastic face]. It was very poor in sound and operation. Lots of static from speakers. I returned it to them for repair, it returned no better. Last fall we made a 6,000 fall foliage tour and I wanted a cd changer. I did not want to chage from a shaft radio[simplicity] and I talked with a local dealer that said their stuff was much improved now. So, I bought another with 10 disc changer. It is ok, but does not compare to the "closeout" shaft unit I put in my F100. I will not be purchasing any other Custom Auto Sound units. I do like the remote mounted stuff for my 40, but it will be from someone else, or not at all. Good too see your post 'fenders. Joe

Just thought I would put in my 2 cents, I know that many people still look to CD changers, but I would recommend looking at the ipod adapters. I have one in my '96 F-250, and love it. It works just like a changer, only I have 2500 songs at my disposal, and it takes up a 1% of the space a changer does. As for Secret Audio, I don't know. I have thought the same thing, they seem like a good idea, but I worry about quality sound. I don't want to wipe blood off my ears, but I do want to hear my music clear and crisp.

Yeah I would go with the different head unit in the glove box. some of them even have a place to plug in that ipod or something like it. would be less expensive and look just as good.

I guess that an old Philco AM radio or a Kraaco 8 track is out of the question???

.........and if you want your music crisp and clear you have to wedge the matchbook in under the 8 track cartridge

oops, I guess i just dated myself a little....

Bobby -

Wish I would have known about the matchbook trick when I had one of those!!!

And yes, that's dating both of us a bit. It is wierd when you mention something that was commonplace to a person who wasn't yet born and they give you one of those "what?" stares.

Remember LP's? Or...how about 45 rpm singles?

I have a custom auto sound radio, speakers and cd changer in my 54 merc car and it is a piece of junk. The equipment that they have now may be better (this stuff is about 6 yrs old) but from day one this thing has never worked right and the people are a real trip to deal with. Maybe it's just my luck I seem to get most of the junk.

To go along with that thinking I had my Mountaineer washed yesterday at the local car wash and now I have several large areas of coating missing off of the rear door and of coarse they didn't do this and the owner won't return any calls.

I'm almost embarassed to say that I still own tons of LP's and a whole box of 8 tracks, and maybe even one or two reel to reel tapes. My kids have no clue as to what they are, shoot, they barely know what a cassette player is..........remember when cassettes were cutting edge?

Now my kids have these little MP3 players that hold a bazillion songs and are about the size of a AA battery.

I'm years away from looking for a good stereo for my truck, who knows what kind of technology will be available when that time comes

OK Edison, you win the old codger award. Now all you have to do is fabricate a system under the dash to hold the cylinders

Can you get the cylinders chromed???

Oh yea. The old Philco AM radio with the tubes and the Kraco 8 track player.

I forgot about those high quality units.
