I guess that an old Philco AM radio or a Kraaco 8 track is out of the question???
.........and if you want your music crisp and clear you have to wedge the matchbook in under the 8 track cartridge
oops, I guess i just dated myself a little....

"LOL" you just took me back to 1969, I had one of those 8 track FM cartridges. I also had to shim it underneath to keep it from bouncing around. And how about the Vibrasonic when you hit a bump.
My brother has a working 8 track player in his 68 Camaro convertible. When he takes it to car shows younger crowd just stare at in wonder, OFs get nostalgic.
Vibrasonic: BOOOIIINNNggggggggg!
There was a 12V auto RCA 45 RPM record player on ebay not too long ago. Now I wish I had bought it and put a head unit inside!
As a "kid"...I like my stereos..but the best is the exhaust of a good muffler...but in my Contour SVT i have a high end Alpine, with infinity speakers and I am gonna do the same for my pickup..they are both quite good sound clarity and quality. You can hide a good CD player too, not just the secret audio head units. I dont understand why a lot of you want to "hide" your head units..unless you are afraid of theft, in whiich you can just remove the face plate and they are no good w/out them. Alpine or Pioneer head units and a good set of Kicker, Infinity, or Boston Acustic Speakers are the best you can go w/and they get good quality.

Many of us just like the clean look of an old steel dash. Even as a rodder, you can add some flash, without bringing the look too far modern. I'm not young, but have an audio setup would usually be purchased by a kid. (Component speakers, AMPs, subs and such). I love my Alpine HU. But it just brings too much bling to the cab for my tastes. Most of the other brands are even worse. I don't desire a jumping dolphin screensaver head unit in my truck. It would look way out of place to me. There was a competive level AMPs in the bed install in an Effie thread here lately. It just looked completely ridiculous to me. Just comes down to personal preference. I couldn't hide my entire install without compromising sound quality. But I only had to expose the component speakers, which are far more subtle than the rest of the system.
I, personally, like to ''hide'' stuff because I like long, smooth, uninterrupted panels. I also keep as much stuff as possible out of the dash so it's easier to service the stuff that is there, and space is at a premium in this truck. I guess you could say that I'd spend a dollar to hide a nickle.
I'm going for an older look to my dash, and if all goes right there won't be room for a stereo in the dash. I want to fill the dash panel with the gauge cluster from a 58 Pontiac.
The stereo will have to go in the console or overhead.
My head unit will be stacked with a drawer style cd storage rack and my heater/AC controls which are all matching Din size in my underdash console. The flat vertical part of the dash will be a smooth brushed SS panel from side to side without anything mounted thru it.
has anybody mounted theirs under the seat? with a remote in hand one doesn't really need to look at the head unit right? My 78 f150 has an 8 track, and my dad's '71' cuda gran coupe had a cassette deck. One could argue that this was technology ahead of it's time lol.
the whole idea, for me anyway, of the secret audio is that the head is remote mounted AND it's hard wired, you can put the gear under the seat and you don't need the remote. I don't know about anyone else but I already have 2 remotes to deal with (garage and driveway gate) and that's plenty.
