96 Explorer message center computer
96 Explorer message center (console) went crazy - flashing, beeping. Dealer says "message center indicator" died. I had him disconnect it.
Later, during service, was told I had to have new "computer" to get rear center brake light working.
Are the brake light and message center indicator linked?
If not, what parts to I need for each repair? I have a part number for the message center indicator, but have been unable to match it through any parts dealer.

Sounds bogus to me, but take a quick look at a wiring diagram.
On a 97 the 3 brake lights are simply spliced to the brake light switch.

Yours might be diferent but on the 97 theres also a fuse for the center brake light. Have you checked that fuse?

The '95 through '97 use the neon light bar for the third brake light. The ballast for the light usually goes out before the light bar does. Easy fix, it's located in the top of the hatch behind the interior panel. Unfortunately, the ballast and neon light bar are not cheap.
