Rebuild or start over?

My lil '86 Ranger is nearing the end of its useful life, and I'm trying to decide if I should fix it up or get a newer one. It is a 2.3 with a 5 speed with over 200K on it. The body is actually perfect, although someone painted it with what looks like flat BBQ black. I've rebuilt engines before, so I'm not afraid of it. Should I drop a fresh engine in it, paint it up, and keep going, or buy a 7-10 year old Ranger with, say, less than 100K miles? That's about the most the budget will allow. My main concern with the '86 is that the various electronics may start giving me trouble; my main concern with a newer rig is that if I spend $4K, I might be buying a piece of junk, and then wouldn't have money to fix it! Of course, buying a newer one is a lot less work, but I actually prefer the Gen I body style. I have new use for new-fangled stuff like A/C, power windows, cruise, etc. Any thoughts?

I'd rebuild it and never look back. you read the thread here about the ranger with 345K miles on it right? its merely a break in period.
