At what RPM does the turbo kick in? Is it around 2000? That's about where my truck gets gobs of power and I need to know if I'm flushing fuel down the drain.
Turbo boost is more tied to engine load than rpm. They spin even at idle. If you are concerned about fuel use, the best way to control that is with your right foot.
yeah, I do try to control the right foot. I know that when I gun it and get to around 2000-2500 RPMs, the sucker takes off like a jet. That's why i was wondering. I've read posts here where guys say they try to keep it under 2000 to keep mpg up. That's why I was asking.
the turbo can spin twice as fast at 1750 RPM with 100% load, than at 3000 rpm with just a slight load. exhaust flow controls the speed of the turbo. there isnt a switch that says "turbo on/off" as the exhaust passes through the turbo, it expands inside the chamber. then it has the compress again to go out of the turbo, and through the exhaust. this compression pushes angled blades axially as it passes out of the chamber, and this spins the turbo over. under load, the engine produces more exhaust, hence the more compression out of the chamber and into the exhaust pipe. this spins the turbo over faster= more boost. plus it produces that awesome whining sound.
