Is it normal for your truck to be noisier when its cold or cool. I'm in San Diego and it only gets down in the 60's right now but when my truck isn't warmed up its louder and it doesn't run as smooth as if its hot. Also by watching my boost gauge, I can see that when its hot, it makes boost smoothly coming off idle. But when its cold, it goes from not making any boost, to a strange pinging sound then it sounds like and starts making boost. Is this the wastegate being stuck or epbv being stuck?
I love my truck when its hot but being that I only drive 3 miles to work, its barely warmed up by the time I get there. So driving to work feels more like I have a poor running psd.
Ditto on that..try flooring it in park right after you start it up in below freezing weather....those rpm's will be REALLY sluggish. Completely normal.
Try it with big injectors. 37 deg. last night. I for got to let the glow plugs warm this morning, yes it fired, no it didn't sound good. Shut it off, cycled the glow plugs again and good to go.
I live in Los Angeles and the temperature is similar. You might want to do like I do. I start it, and squeege the dew from the windows. In that short time, it will have warmed enough to run smoother but still lacking in power until the engine temps start to register on the gage.
On the positive side though... once they warm up they run like raped apes in the cold. Love that dense cold air.
Sorry guys I'm just trying to think of the positive side of winter.
My old bones like the cold less and less as the years speed buy.
Thanks, I'm glad its normal then. I use my remote start every morning and let it idle for a few minutes. I guess it just takes a while for it to warm up.
Sounds normal but your truck will benfit w/a 203* t-stat.
NOT the one sold by IH but the one sold by Bob Riley. His has the same physical design as the OEM but is set to open a little hotter like 195-197 or so.
This will help your truck in the winter and in summer when you get going on a long trip she just rolls on the miles.
As for 3 miles a trip your right she's not warmed up yet so remember to give her an italian tune up once in a while!
diesels rely on heat the make power. plain and simple. with no heat, there is no power. i start my truck up 5-10 minutes before i have to leave in cold weather. it also pre-heats the cab so its not freezing when you hop in.
Italians make some of the worlds fasted cars (ie ferrari).
Italian tune up means let it warm up, and then drive the H-E double hockeysticks out of it once in a while. Get on a the highway and mash it, and enjoy that cool turbo sound.
