Help! Braking Problem In The Wet.
I am fairly new to diesel and own a 1988 XLT F250and my brakes are giving me a lot of concern. I bought my truck in the summer and today was the first i have driven it in the rain. The problem is when i brake in the wet even if driving slowly at 20 or less it feels if the brakes are locking and it goes iinto a small skid. The ABS light does not come apart from the intial start up . My local mechanic took it for a drive and he suggested i drop the tire pressures. I was running at 51 in the front and 80 in the back as per the information in the door jamb, but i have been running the truck empty. I dropped the rear pressure to 64 and left the front at 51 but i have just had a test drive and the problem is still there. Are my tire pressures still to high as i have no information on pressures for running a empty truck. The maximum pressures stated on my tires are 80 lbs. It is hard to tell if the front or rear are locking or both. I would appreciate any advice in this as i need to get it sorted because it does not feel very safe. Actually it did lock once briefley in the summer but it did not return till today.
Many thanks.
If it's your front it could still be contaminated pads up there or a sticking caliper.
Or maybe your brakes just need to be bled, can't hurt to start there.
I get so excited when I drive in the rain and I have 12.5 inches of mud tire skidding on pavement. I know why mine does it, im just too lazy/poor to change my oil soaked pads.
How does gear oil make two surfaces stick together easier? One of those mysteries of life I guess.
It also helps if your shocks actually have gas in them too. Mine are just there for looks I guess, Ill change em someday. Right now she bounces like a jackass at a stoplight.
Anyways, I will gaurantee you it is not your front locking up. I have never seen my front tires skid with 10 tons of diesel motor sitting on them.
