Hey, i just bought a 79 f100 for $40. The cab was lit on fire and everything is melted and fried inside the cab. Now, he said the 302 was running before the cab caught on fire. The chassis, running gear, and everything under the hood was untouched by the fire. I can get the engine to turn over but now i have to bypass the ignition switch so i can get some spark. How can i by pass the ignition switch? Or can i wire in a new one? I have the Ford Truck Shop Manuals, but there are no real good wiring diagrams. Can i run a wire straight from the starter relay and splice it in somewhere? Or hot wire a quick disconnect somewhere? Any help would be great.
Use a wire and jump 12 volts to the "I" terminal of the starter relay, this will put 12 volts direct to coil +. Not a good idea to run it for days and days this way hard on the coil.
Next use a nother tenp jumper to jump 12 volts to the "S" terminal of the starter relay. Engine will turn over as soon as you do this and if all is well it will start.
All you will have is a running engine, no power to turn on the alternator or anything else.
But at least you can check out a running engine
I have a Haynes manual for the 79 F100. The wiring diagrams in there are very accurate. The one for my truck is in there, and it's right on the money. I used it to trace down a short I had in the harness going back to the taillights and it was a huge help.
You got your self a steal, that's for sure! Haynes and Chilton's are good, get both. Get the Chiltons for 65 - 83. Chilton's has fewer wiring diagrams for the entire truck, but has better component-specific diagrams. It shows, for example, all 3 DuraSpark wiring setups used up to '83, and how they're wired up.
You would be better off, I think, using your '79's running gear in another 73 - 79 F-100 which needs a motor and trans. Keep it if you can for other parts as well, like fenders, trim, etc.
You've got so much work ahead of you, it isn't funny, that it would really be best to use yours for parts to get another one on the road. Cab fires are partuclarly bad because of all the wiring problems and only partly ruined plastic parts you don't know about until you've spent too much money trying to get it back up.
Just my thoughts.
I have no intensions of bringing this truck back to life. I just want to test out the engine which i hope to put into a project later down the road. I have the Chiltons manual, and the wiring diagrams arent specific enough for what i want. I basically want to make/modify the old wiring harness so i can get some life out of the beast. Oh well, she'll be running soon, i hope. Thanks for all your help.
