Hi, I have a 1992 F-150 2WD with a 300-I6. The steering is very sloppy. I have replaced all of the tie-rods, and adjusted the steering gearbox. After the adjustment, it is better for a short while, but the slop always returns which I understand means it is shot.
I would like to replace/rebuild the gearbox. Ford quoted me about $280 for one from them. I believe the 3rd-party replacement is around $150 or so. I have also seen rebuild kits.
I have seen where others have used the 3rd-party parts only to not be much better than what they had. Does anyone have an opinion as to the best course of action? I don't mind paying the $280 if it is going to be right, but the 3rd-party part or rebuild kit would be much cheaper.
While I am at it, is there anything critical to be aware of when replacing/adjusting?
I went with the third party one - I think mine was about $190 from Napa. I've been happy with it so far. It steers very well and doesn't leak.
The installation was a chore. Holding a 100 lb gearbox up to the frame while you try and snake the bolts through was fun. I'd recommend figuring out a way to suspend it while you do it. Your back will thank you later. Mine was killing me for two days after.
I would also replace the power steering pump at the same time. I did, and it worked out well. Most places won't warranty either the pump or the gearbox if you don't replace both at the same time.
Thanks for the suggestions. That sounds good to me. I guess catching 100 lbs. would be exciting. I am finishing up with another project, but I will be sure to let you know how it goes.
By the way Andym, two questions: How do you prove you replaced everything and what adjustment procedure did you follow after installing?
