I only stir because Ford (and others) seem to find the new 6.4 amusing in respects to that they feel it will be "untuneable" and "unmoddable" due to PCM strategy and shear complexity...I've heard comments from engineers, technicans, and elsewhere.
We will see about that
Yeah, about as un moddable as the new twin cam HD motor.........it took all of 3 years for S&S to build a replica of a new motor that had over 400 patents applied for on it. 124 C.I. boasting 129 h.p. and 137 ft. lbs. of torque for $3700 more than H.D.'s screaming eagle 103 inch stroker making way less numbers. Plus a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty if you run their ignition. I mention this because I have seen this secenaro play out first hand in the past few years, exactly what is going on now with our trucks. I am a much more accomplished HD mechanic, than I ever will be on light duty diesels. In short I know what it takes to make HP out of a 90 year old design, out of habit. Could not afford to pay anyone to make it go faster, so had to figure it out myself. Figured it out and then some to say the least. Maybe in a few years I'll get the bug on this truck. By then you will have it all figured out Matt, then be looking for my call!!
Just think of this new engine's capability to gain massive amounts of torque with those twin turbos. Man, I hope this thing is everything I've heard about it.

I don't reckon anyone in their right mind (Ford included) would say that the 6.4l is untouchable, it will be harder thats all.
I don't think any calibration engineer gets his kicks out of making it a pain for aftermarket companies to tune. But for MANY reasons they have to make it more than a little difficult for the average consumer to stuff around with it.
Liability being the first thing.

I was being a little sarcastic when I wrote it, thanks to an area field rep we have who has been going around, bragging, and attempting to rub in the fact that their new engine is "unmoddable" and that he won't have to come out to examine for claims anymore.

Yeah right
Matt, isnt that better that they never come out? they will think its untouched and you could get any warranty work done. Maybe thats my spin on that but still.
I didn't necessarily mean it's going to be un-modable. From what I hear, "once you open the hood the first time, you aren't going to want to open it again." (Engineer speaking to technician) It's just that tight. I'll keep my cool and wait to see it before I start shaking in my boots!

Don't know for sure but it involves some new technology, a new exhaust system and a new fuel injection system. Have fun modding this one!
The new exuast system you speak of will most likely be a particulate emmisions filter. Complete with sensor boxes tied into the computer system. It will weigh 100+ pounds, cost around $1500 and require cleaning at the dealership. They will not be required untill '08 but most large diesel manufacturers are planning to release them in 07'. Trust me its gonna suck, I had to do some design work on them. On a plus side the ones we worked on provided zero exuast restriction over pipe intil 50% plugged(time for cleaning) and the pressure differential sensors inside it will tell you when that happens.
