Im going to be moving all my stereo stuff from my truck(rest her soul) to the new "gutless" cruiser(burns that its not a ford, but it was free and newer). I am going to be getting a new pioneer HU to power the new Kicker 6x9s in the rear hatch, which thump pertty good for just being 6x9s. I am going to be building a sub box for my 10" rockford, and I was wondering if I should port the box or not. Its going to be hidded in the rear storage compartment(anyone who has seen one of these wagons knows what im talking about) and is prob going to be about 24in long, 7.5in high and 14in wide. Will that be enough to port it(fact specs say 1.0cu ft)? I already had this sub in the truck and it pounded GREAT in a sealed box. The ported ones Ive heard sound alot louder. Mostly be listening to classic rock, some newer rock and country. Also, would the sub still sound good hidden in this storage cmprtment, its in teh back of the car and theres a door over it.
The box you are thinking of using will give you just a tad over 1cu ft...not including the what the woofer displaces. So I'd say keep it sealed. Also for the fact that sealed boxes are better suited for the type of music you listen to. Ported and bandpass boxes are more designed for rap/techno or any type of music dedicated strictly to bass. Here is a good link to check out: http://www.bcae1.com/spboxnew2.htm
I agree - stay sealed
something you should understand about ported \bandpass box's
is they can be louder by a db or two--but they have a spike in the output
they are tuned to a certain frequency(with the port) and right in the this range they are loader
the sealed box provides much flatter response on the useable freq. range
and IMO sound better overall
Yea, I decided to stay sealed. I read a bit about other boxes and I am just too lazy to build a custom box, since I do like the hidden storage space. Im gonna use the box from the truck, carpet it(where do I buy that stuff, I have a Big Apple Music near by..). Just bought a 1400w dual amp wiring kit(with all the needed hardware, incl splitter block and rca cbls), dash install kit and the wiring harness. HU should be here tomorrow. Im all excited, I cant wait to put it all in and have it look good and professional. I have one more question, what would poly-fil do in my sub box, and how much should in put in if any.
Polyfill makes the box act like it's bigger than it actually is. In my experience it makes the bass sound a little better, not so much of a "hollow" sound. I would fill about 1/3 of the volume of the box with polyfill, if you decide you need it. As for carpet, I would use the automotive carpet they have a autozone, pep boys, ect. it's a little thinner and more flexible around corners and use contact cement to glue it down.
Got it all put in yesterday, the HU and all the wiring. It looks really professional, no cob job wiring. Filled the box with polyfill, man did that stuff make it sound alot better. Pounds hard and so deep the car shakes. Tickles my brain it does! I just bought some regular carpet from Lowes, staples and glued it on and it looks cool. I can see the seams of where the carpet where pieces meet, maybe Ill try and find some kind of corner trim, like daimond plate or something cool. Do they sell box edge covering stuff?? Thanks again guys youve made me marter!!
A really trick idea I found while I was waiting to have the spray in bed liner put in my truck...coat the box in bed liner. It is seamless, lifetime guarantee, and helps reduce box flex. It looked pretty cool. Take a look at my gallery to see the LineX liner, and picture a speaker box coated in that.
