Hey guys (and girls) im thinking about maiking a Sub Box and was wondering whether i should go ported or sealed right now it looks like the exterior dimensions will be 20.5x30x11.75. I currently have two 10'' MTX thunder 6000s powered by an mtx 342 amp in a MTX Sealed enclosure thats about 30x12x12 and I think these subs sound great. I like pretty much all kinds of music but mostly listen to rock. Also im planning on having the subs set up to fire down. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.
my advice is stay sealed, it'll give better bass feed back for rock, although a properly designed ported box will have greater output for a dedicated range of frquenys and a ported box can sound great for rock music, stay sealed.
I strongly agree with optikal. Go sealed if you listen to aolt of rock.
You will get better frquency transfer and cleaner sound. The measurements you gave would yeild a damn big box. I got an est of about 4.19 cu feet. Thats ALOT of airspace for 2 10's. Thats too much space even for 3 10" in a sealed enclosure. Did you want to stick with your current subs, or are u thinking of upgrading ?

I disagree. Some subs better sealed while other sound better ported. It depends on the sub itself and its parameters.
However, I will agree with both and say to still go sealed. This is based on your particular sub. I would not want to put the 4000 or 6000 series subs in ported boxes.
Thanks for all the responses guys. Yeah i have been thinking about getting maybe some of the 8000s or moving up to twelves just gotta find some i like as good as these tens. Assuming i do stick with the two 6000s will the large amount of airspace adversly (sp?) effect the performance? Also any recomendations on some better subs would be appreciated nothing toooo expensive preferably less than 200 a piece. Thanks Alot.
P.S. If I did go to three tens how would i wire it?
If you keep that amp, I HIGHLY recommend getting an Elemental Designs K series sub. The first 2003 revisions are out of stock and the new revision will be ready on June 1. Because of that, I will instead suggest getting the Stryke Audio SAE1204 sub.
Wiring that sub in parallel to your amp would put out max power. Run that sub in a 2.5 cube box tuned to 32hz with about 25-30 inches of port area and you'll be EXTREMELY happy
Port tuning's role in the final sound is dependant on woofer selection and the final net volume that you will use. I could take a Kicker L7 12, put it in a .5 cube ported box tuned to 30hz, and I guarentee it will sound like azz
i really think the elemental design K series would suit u well. also the Resonant Enginering SE series is about the same price but would get louder. tempe has the SE, if u want more info about em.
OK, I got the box put together and everything. Went ahead and stuck with sealed also its somewhat smaller than i had estimated with about 2.5 cubic feet of airspace 1.25 for each sub with a divider in between. One thing I was considering though is something different from carpet to cover it with. Has anyone tried regular fabric from FabricKing or JoAnns or something liek that? Anyone know if that will work? or if not regular fabric how about somewhere i can order some diff looking carpet from? Thanks again for all the help.
ever think about spray on bed liner? i seen it on someones box and it actually looked fantastic but needs a nice flat surface. u can also but a logo or design on the box and spray over that so it stands out...i might try that with mine. i went to wal-mart and bought a can of dupli-color bed liner spray (spray can) for about $7, thats what im using to cover mine.
hey i kinda like that idea about spray on bedliner but how would it affect the seal of the subs and terminals? Also yeah i had thought about a designn was gonna try it like they do for headliners with the foam underneath and stuff.
