I have a 1997 SuperCab 2.3 5speed 4x2. It's going to spend the rest of its life in suburbia on paved roads. I drive it wearing a suit and tie!
Now, I need to replace the shocks. I don't haul much of anything in it, but I want something that can handle an occasional load. I don't want something extremely stiff, like you'd have for off-roading, but I don't want something worthlessly soft, like Monroe Gas-Matics either.
What do you guys recommend? What are the plusses and minuses of different brands and varieties?
I haven't replaced the shocks on my Ranger yet, but i put a set of Gabriels from pep boys on my silverado and it almost rides like a car on the freeway. I plan on putting the same shocks on my ranger since i've had good luck with them. They aren't too expensive and you can buy them at pep boys.
If you like the way that the truck rode originally I would go back to a dealer and buy factory replacements. I have bilstein heavy duty off road gas shocks from the factory on my 2004 FX4 Level II and they ride quite nice on the road. No complaints about them so far and ford has used bilstein for a long time especially on interceptor packages.
When I got my truck w/117000km/72+K miles I changed out the shocks for Monroe Sensatrac in the front and MonroMatics in the rear. Seems to do the job..but it seems Ive always had issues with what I call a 'loose' front end. But that may not be a shock issue...yet the ball joints etal seems ok. ?!?!?
