Hi everyone. I've got a '99 Ranger with the 4.0 engine. Based on other posts I've read, I am almost certain that my oil pressure sending unit is bad because the oil pressure gauge jumps from its normal position to way low and then back up again every once in a while. The engine sounds just fine, and it's not leaking any oil. Anyway, the entended warranty on my truck just went up this past summer, so I am going to try to fix this myself. I would rather not have to pay the $100/hour my dealership charges. So, if someone could give me some pointers on how to do it, that would be appreciated. Where can I find the sensor? Do I need to drain out the oil? Are any special wrenches necessary? I am going to go out and try to find it right now. Thanks for your input.
On my '98, it's located at the lower front driver's side of the engine, in the area underneath where the A/C compressor is located, it kinda sticks out of the motor about and inch or two, there is a single wire coming off of it...
Unclip the harness connector and use a wrench to unscrew the oil pressure switch. That's pretty much all there is to it.
Thanks Rockledge! I switched the parts this evening and everything was exactly how you described it. The only trouble I had was getting to the darn thing. With all of the hoses running around under there it was a tight squeeze to get the wrench hooked on. Everything seems to work fine. Hopefully that was the problem. Thank you again.
I have an electric oil pressure gauge I want to install in my '04 3.0. I had planned to install a nipple with a T to make both the gauge and the idiot light function, but I can't find the sender. Where is it?

The location of the sensor on the 3.0 motor may be in a different location, but on my 4.0 it was exactly where Rockledge referred to in his post above. I found it by laying under the engine with the left front tire just to the left and behind my head. The white colored wire connector made it stand out. If that is not the correct location on the 3.0, then sorry, I can't help you out. Good luck.
