Hey,
I own a '94 F350 crew cab dually with the 7.3 IDI.
This is far from my first Ford truck, but she is the first 7.3 IDI. I have used after market scanners since they were made available, but obviously this engine has no port for diagnosing.
Any advice on it would be appreciated.
For example, the fuel filter is the open ends type. Is there some reason why I can't just switch to a traditional style fuel filter?
Or how to determine if it has a power problem?
I am used to Cat engines as I am a retired trucker, but I sure feel dumb here.
Thanks, Rusty
Does your truck smoke? If so, what color is the smoke? White smoke after difficulty starting usually indicates air intrusion. Heavy black smoke that smells like diesel fuel (rolling coal) would indicate that someone turned up the fuel screw on your IP.
You can get the filters with or without the water in fuel sensor, theyre considerably cheaper without. If you buy good fuel, or habitually drain it periodically, get the cheap one. Does yours start hard, smoke, feel underpowered? What are you trying to diagnose?
