That "silencer" ring acts as a baffle in the compressor housing to force surge air (from chopping the throttle) back away from the compressor wheel rather than deeper into the housing.
This is what prevents the "compressor surge" problem that the NBS 7.3 liter trucks had. Instead, you get the harmless turbo fart, rather than rattling and scraping of the shaft support bearings.
I certainly wouldn't recommend removing it. Just my opinion, though....most people wouldn't recommend a 4400 rpm shift point either, but that doesn't stop me

Mods are one thing, but when you get down to the basics of a turbo charger, and they are very basic by design, the manufacturers do not install equipment or extra metal that is not needed. For all of you that don't know, if the cold side or hot side wheel ever touches the volute, (housing) its junk period, end of story.
I am confused about this post. I found this post awhile ago and saved it for a point of refrence when I decided to remove the silencer ring in my X.
Well I just got done putting everything back together after trying to remove the ring.
I had no luck with this, it looks like the ring on my truck is part of the housing , unless I am miss understanding something, not all 03 can remove this ring.
Which is ok, but it would have been nice to get some more whistle. I thought this would be good info to mention.
