Wink Fuel tank varnish

I have two 88 Aero's, both have been sitting, one I pulled the tank, replaced the fuel pump, put in gas and it ran , then quit again after about 100 miles,
well I noticed that it had varnish pretty bad , but used fuel system cleaner
hoping it would disolve and burn it, after It quit, I changed fuel filter as I
figured it needed it, looked ok tho, almost no trash in it. So I gotta pull the
tank again and try to clean out the varnish this time! Any suggestions on how, (as it is not getting fuel again and I replaced the screen and pump)
to effectively clean out the tanks as I know the other does too. I thought about Lacquer thinner, maybe a couple of gallons and slosh back and forth
quite a bit then flush with a couple of gallons of gas, then reinstall?

Any thoughts on this appreciated, this is the 17 gallon plastic tank, really
looks like composite fiber of some sort, rather than plastic. One I had bought as a parts vehicle, but after looking at it, I may try to fix it, it was
headed for the crusher but has great interior, no dents outside, just some fading clear coat, its the XL with all the bells and whistles, auto 3.0, the
other is a plain jane with 3.0 and 5 speed tranny, it is great, engine only has 50K on it! Rough body tho....fair interior...another problem the parts
vehicle I have no key for, whats the easiet way to get key codes as the locksmiths want close to 100 bucks to come here and make an ign key which fits all locks. So I really have two questions. Thanks for any help.

Take the VIN code to the dealer and have a key made. You may need to show ownership before they make you the key.

100 bucks is not out of order. Consider, they need to charge you for the service call, and then custon cut keys from scratch, which means they have to create a temporary duplicate. This takes a whole lot more than simply cutting a copy of an existing key. Plus they have to charge you for their time, and doing this could take some time.

I know that 100 bucks may not be much but I am on fixed income, so trying to get by as cheap as possible, but I may go that route. He said If I brought the vehicle by they would make a key for 60 bucks...but no tow dollie or other means.

Or I can call the dealer and see what is required on an older vehicle as I have no papers yet on this one, I know a guy who can get a Tn title in 2 hours, for 40 bucks so I guess I will go that route on the title....but first wanted to fire the engine off and see what all works, etc before I get too deep into this. Something I didn't mention was that I have code books and key cutters, just no code, I know how to cut keys, I was unable to pick the lock on this one, most I can, this one has about two pins in the rear that I can't lock to unlock and turn on. Someone mentioned that one of the door locks would have the code stamped on it, well I pulled the drivers out and cleaned off, not code on it...so I guess may try the other side, the side slider and rear, you have to take the panel loose to get to them so I would imagine that one of those has the code.

But Thanks for the replys, just trying to keep from spending more than is necessary.

sounds like you have old decomposed gas syrup goop in the bottom of the tank. when I was a teen with first car, used to siphon old gas out of wrecks, abandoned in field old cars, really gummed up '56 Ford Crown Vic Y block.
don't use the acetone/paint thinner on any of the pump unit parts. I would thin the mix 1 part paint thinner/5 parts gas, let set for a couple hours, pour out, use only flash light to look inside tank, 120v light electrical spark will ruin your day.

how is tank on other van?

call Ford dealers in your area, ask what they require to make key
offer notarized bill of sale, ignition switch cylinder and VIN

Ricardo:

I think we're all on fixed income here. That means only enough "income to fix the van."

Or you could just use a match that would ruin your day too.

I must be in a rare area where they don't put the additives in gas that cause it to varnish or at least as quickly I recently refilled my lawn mower gas can and I've had it for 5 years no varnish in the can and no gumming up in the mowers carb. I disassembled it and checked.

Maybe because my garage is dark and the temperature is fairly stable that allows the gas to last?

Both vans were sitting, one for 2 years, the other for three, both have varnish real bad, the first one I pulled the tank on it and replaced the pump and screen, well I noticed the varnish on sender and all, but I thought well new
gas will dissolve and then it will burn it...wrong! It ran for 100 miles, then started starving like running out of fuel, so I put in 3 of the fuel injector cleaners to about 11-12 gallons of gas, it helped a little then got worse, barely made it home, thats when I changed the fuel filter, then I siphoned out the gas in it, it looked awful and smelled bad, so used it for week killer around the fence, going to pull the tank again, pretty easy with the quick couple fittings and c-clips, two straps and the filler neck, the book says it will come out then but what they didn't tell you is you gotta pull the driveshaft and move to one side as it sits about 6-7 inches from fuel tank and no way to get out without. I noticed at Wally World lacquer thinner or acetone....I really don't care for acetone, the flashpoint on it is worse than gas, so will go with the thinner and clean, 2 gallons clean one maybe reuse on the second one two, then will have to take to recycle center, as its pretty bad to dump...our drinking water here is pulled from the lake and the water table below my lot is only about 10 feet. But I know it will take it out, then flush with gas again. Gas evaporates pretty fast and kills weeds too. Just can't smoke around it for a few minutes or you'll be a crispy critter. LOL
Thanks all

alcohol is the worst, no visible flames and not a large amount of smoke.
only notice when skin starts to tingle and melting skin starts to sluff off.

ricardo288:

Why don't you remove one of the locks from one of the doors, Open the lock and see
what size pins are in it. Then cut the key to fit.............

Good Idea, JT, just that I have no pins, course I could identify by cut to set my cutter, its a hand held cutter, some doors use 5 pins, ign 6 so don't know
on this but somone says that one of the locks on the vehicle would have the code stamped in it....I checked the driver, easy to get out, just pull the c clip holding it in, eased it out and looked no code, so that leaves the passenger, the sliding side door and the rear hatch. two of those have the panels that you have to take loose to get your hand inside to pull the clip, so may be the
hardest one to get hold of. May call the ford dealer and see if someone knows.

But thanks, another way to look at it.
