Trailer Wiring Diagrams

I am in the process of wiring my '76 F150 for a boat trailer. From what I've noticed, the primary wires used are yellow, brown and green. Off the back bumper there are these three wires stubbed off the wiring going to the taillights, so I'm assuming these are the wires used. I purchased a newer wiring harness which also includes a white wire. Am i safe in assuming this is a ground wire? Does anyone know what these other wires are for? Thanks in advance for your help.

White is ground. Brown is for the tail/marker lights. Yellow and green are for right & left turn signal, but I am not sure which is left and which is right, but when green and yellow are both activated, this makes your brake lights. Does your boat trailer have brakes on the wheels? There should be a wire for this also unless the trailer has hydraulic brakes. There may also be an aux wire for such things as backup lights or trailer battery charge wire.

Like M is right on, I used my white wire, drilled a small hole and with a self tapping screw after scraping the paint attached it to the tongue of my trailer. All of the connectors have four wire pins anyway. Make sure there is a ground from the truck side if you choose to do this, or you will only be half way there.

Just turn your signal on and find which is left and right. The signal and brake is on the same wires. The tail is seperate.

Here in the US, the wiring is slightly different from the diagram.
Brown....Taillights
Yellow ... left turn
Green... Right turn
white... ground
Red... Trailer electric brakes

Other colors are used for more hookups
I have that info if you need it

Dennis, I wont say that your diagram is wrong but, have never seen that in my life. The code I know is:
white=ground
brown=tail
yellow=drivers
green=passengers

The way my grandfather taught me to remember it is as follows

White goes to GROUND as it is the only post on the plug that is not protected from grounding out.

Brown is what the guy behind you'll find in his pants the night your TAIL LIGHTS dont work.

Green is the color of the grass on the PASSENGERS side of the trailer.

Yellow is the color of the center line on the DRIVERS side of the trailer.

Hope this helps.

You know,after taking a closer look and delving into my memory banks,I have to agree wuth you.
I think the guy who made this for me, got the two wire mixed up.

To me,brown was always running lights.
I'll get rid of the diagram.

I also missed the part earlier about the three extra wires so, maybe he has a 6 pin connector as opposed to the four pin.
This one also has the green being running lights.

Maybe this is the *Canadian* Standard Wiring.

I know both sides of my trailer at the back lights have green & white wires going to them.Also,one brown and one yellow wire.

Okay here ya go

4 way flat plug( most small trailers and boat trailers):white=ground,
brown=taillight, yellow=left turn+brake, green=right turn+brake

6 way round plug (larger trailers and horse trailers);
same as above plus blue=electric brakes, black=battery feed.

7 way round plug with flat pins (most larger RV trailers);

Don't cut and splice your wires, your asking for trouble down the road. -been there... Most auto parts stores have a splice that uses the factory harness. You unplug the factory harness at the rear bumper and plug each end into a plastic plug that has a lead for the trailer. Easy, no cutting wires and the colors are correct. I would recommend looking for one of those.

Just a thought...
