GJSPCLT, after my persistence at the dealer, and up the chain of command, I finally heard a possibility of this problem. They asked me if I hear it in right turns only, I checked it out and it was true. At first it was intermittent, but I could reproduce it for the tech. They did the hose bulletin and it did get quieter but it was still there and I could always here the subtle noise (same tone). It is quite loud now and it is obviously getting worse, I hear it almost all the time and it will howl loudly on right turns in parking lots and on the highway ramps. The tech hotline said it is a loose screen in the power steering reservoir and it is a Ford fix, they are aware of it. The screen moves and starves the pump (restricts the flow). The dealer ordered a new updated reservoir and will install it soon, I will keep you posted.<O</O
Well i guess you can add me to the crowd of people with intermitten power steering issues. 2001 / 5.4 / Auto. Mine only seem to rear their ugly head when its below 20 degrees. Start up the truck and it sounds like theres no fluid in the pump at all. Sprayed down everything and drove it for a day. Looks like the seal where the shaft comes out that attaches to the pulley is shot. No idea why this would make it howl but what do i know. Changing the pump on Sunday, hopefully i don't have to change the hose. I'll let ya all know.
Well i just finished installing the new power steering pump, and so far no leaks, or noises. It was around 24 degrees out when i finished and then bled the system, and it didn't make a peep. Hopefully tomorrow it'll be nice and cold out. That'll be the true test. Hope you figure it out Downsized.
