It has happened maybe 5 times in a year of having the truck and it has only done it while backing up into a parking spot. The power steering fails to the point where I had to use just about all my upper body strength to turn the wheels. Then as soon as I pull forwards after a second or so the issue goes away.
The dealership drove it and states they cannot reproduce so they will not throw parts at the truck. What to do? I am afraid of it loosing power when driving, in a corner, on the freeway... that could suck.
Oh... and no, my foot was not on the break pedal, it was in reverse, no parking break, level ground... blah, blah, blah.
i believe the p/s issue your describing is just characteristic of the truck. I've had an 01 F350 4X4 V-10, and now an 04 F250 6.0l PSD, and both trucks did this. I believe its a low rpm issue with the p/s pump. I've also had it do it in forward as well as reverse.
My 05 cc sb has made a grunting noise from new in slow speed turns, I thougt there was some tsb on this. I am afraid to let the dealers screw it up more by fixing it.
Is it just when you happen to have the brake applied?
You might feel less help from the Power Steering when the brake pedal is stomped down because some of the available pressure for steering assistance is being used to power the hydraulic brake booster. I don't know if the V10s use hydroboost for the brakes like the diesels do, but I know the diesels use the power steering system for the hydraulic pressure source.
I had this problem for the first time the other day. Came whipping into a parking spot going somewhat fast and got on the brakes hard and cut the wheel and it was like I lost all power steering and had to really crank on it to get it to turn. Hasn't done it since then. I figured it was just the situation I put the truck in and it didn't like it using a lot of steering and brakes at the same time.
Timely info. I had this only once. Just this week I was backing out of the driveway in the morning and felt a split second loss of power steering. It was fleeting.

This thread tends to make me think that one incident is not indicative of impending failure.
Iisaforddriver, My X started making the noise in turns and it got worse, very loud whine/groan in slow tight turns. The Tech said that it sounded like it was sucking air. They replaced the power steering pump and it was still there. They did the TSB which is a power steering hose and it went away (almost, faint). I can hear it times but it is not very loud. Lately, it is coming back, getting louder in those turns again. It is going back in next week.
I am thinking noise in turns might have to do with a failing or failed front-end component, like a balljoint or tie rod. It might really be straining to move it if it came back after the TSB work.
I have the noise and it took my dealership some time talking to ford. There is a know problem with some of the Power steering hoses that causes this. Have them replaced under warranty. My parts should be here tomorrow and I will take it in for groaning on slow tight turns. Only happens when turning the wheel not when at a steady turning position (meaning steering wheels constantly moving.) Just a thought that it might be related.
they did just replace the ball joints as they had slop... that could have been the fix I guess... however it will resume and I will have to replace them once a year myself after the warranty expires... should not have bought a truck with a lift even if it is "covered" by the dealer
Cowboy Brett, The noise I hear is subtle and intermitent. Sometimes out of the blue, I will make a tight fast turn (one like at the end of an on ramp before you get on a highway except at slower speeds) and it will howl like there is no fluid. That is the noise that I am starting to hear again. The subtle noises has always lead me believe that it would resurface again. The TSB replacement hoses did stop the howling for a little while, but it must be something more.
I noticed that the fluid level in my '05 was a bit low when checking it. So far I have not lost the PS as above. The truck does not have a leak, that I can find... but the fluid level is right at the bottom line.
I have an 01 SD with a 5.4L and at a low rpm(idle) the steering makes a howling or whinning sound and it is very difficult to turn. Just wondering if this is normal? Had 3 other fords and they made the noise but never that difficult to steer.thanks

Here is the link to my post, I have spent hours reading all of your post and responses, and I have come to one conclusion. We all have the same problem with no solution. Too funny. Mine does it all the time, no intermitent problem here. All the time baby. Ball joints, tie rods (not inner yet), 3 pumps, and a wonderful visit to the dealer. Any insight you may have would be helpful. While this may be the norm, I am considering opening a machine shop spitting out smaller pump pulleys and retiring.
Thanks
