Does anyone know anything about mcculloch generators, im interested in buying one but know nothing of them, they say that the engine is mcculloch but it looks an awful lot like a honda.
I haven't heard of McCullough generators. Here's a great web site to check on generators and lots of ofther electornics, cars, tools, etc. It's free, and probably has one of the largest customer opinion roundups of any comparison site:
Last I checked, every generator on the market (portable generators, that is), were made by Briggs & Stratton, as were the motors on most everything but the Hondas. There's no way I'd pay the extra cash for the Honda nameplate, or even a Honda engine, when every "feature" they offer was designed and introduced by Briggs or Techumseh..
So, for the most part, they're all the same, save a few bells and whistles.
If the price is right, it beats sitting in the dark.
McCullough has been around for a long time. I don't know a whole lot about them except they made a good chain saw back in the 60's. There was also outboard motors by McCullough, same company?? I don't know. My brain is fuzzy on details from my youth (no it's not on account of drugs)

Last I heard McCullouch went out of business. I think this happened about 3-5 years ago. I liked their stuff but parts have been getting hard to find.
I keep hoping someone will ressurect the line. I think when last doing business they were making stuff in Mexico, but that died like I said a few years back. Augggh, looking at the web (http://www.mccullochpower.com/default.asp) , I see my dream/nightmare has come true. They are back in business and owned by a Taiwan mfg. It sounds like the US division is just a distributor and marketeer. I have a poor opinion of Taiwan products, so I'll leave it at that. At least I guess this means I will be able to get parts, I hope.
As far as generators it does seem as if only Honda and B&S(or clones) make the engines for the samll generators out there. From what I have heard and read, the Hondas are quiet and the B&S ar usually noisier. Guessing maybe the more expensive models would be quieter.
The OHV engines seems to be quieter and they are smaller/lighter too.
If I was looking for a small one, it would depend on how I wanted to use it as a decision factor. For quiet but expensive the Hondas look good. For cheap and rugged, the B&S based ones look good. If I was looking for a larger generator, I like the Generac line.
I personally have a 600W/1000peak generator from Nissan that has a Kawasaki 1.5hp(?)engine. The Kawi looks like a miniature B&S engine. Noisy as all heck tho. But the generator has been reliable and worked for me since about 1993. I will probably get a bigger one so I can run my trailer AC now that we have moved to warmer So Cal.
I saw what looked exactly like a Honda generator at an autoparts store, except it was a made-in-China clone, selling for a fraction of the price of a real Honda. Maybe the "McCulloch" generator is just a label on one of these made-in-China units.

If McCullouch (with a "U") went out of business, the Taiwanese are trying to capitalize on the name (no "U" in the web site URL). Another caveat when using the internet!
