I just picked up a 87 f350 deisel.
the truck is in nice shape except it was not running when I bought it
the previsous owner run it out of fuel
then burnt out the starter tring to restart it
so now I got to bleed the air out of the fuel system
any one got any ways or tricks on doing this,
oh ya it is a 6.9
If it is an automatic,
Put fuel in it.
Loosen several injector lines at the injectors, careful you do not want to twist the line or it will crack or crimp.
Crank the engine with the throttle pedal on the floor.
Crank the engine in 10 or 15 second bursts and let the starter cool off for a couple of minutes between bursts.
When you start getting fuel out the injector lines, retighten the nuts holding the lines down.
It shound start, may run rough till the air is all purged out of the fuel system.
If it is a manual,
Put fuel in it.
Pull start it in secnd gear.
It should have the tire valve looking thing on the fuel filter. just hold that in to bleed it after you get it started or maybe even while having someone else cranking.
Make sure there is more than 1/3 tank of fuel in the tank used. You could use a hose and connect a fuel can directly to the fuel lift pump this would eliminate any possible fuel tank/line problems. Do a fuel pressure test at the Schrader valve......
I took a small tire valve air fitting from an old air hose, hooked it up to about 2 ft. of fuel hose, held it on the schrader valve on the fuel filter assembly and let it pump into a clean glass jar to bleed off air. Then I dumped the fuel right back into the tank. That way I could avoid spraying fuel on the motor and stinking up the place. Those air fittings are just a couple of bucks at any home center.
well it fired up with no probs but oil pressure goes up and down
I think I going to change the oil and see if that helps
thanks again
Is it the ford dash gage or a mechanical gage? If its the ford gage then the sender could be bad, if its a mechanical gage, at hot idle the pressure should be 10-15 psi and at 2000 rpms 40-70 psi.

Why such a large spread in the acceptable pressures at speed? What is the spec. pressure?
Those are Internationals specs on the IDI.
I had to call on that when I was having oil pressure problems with one of my reman engines, 3 PSI at hot idle. 300 miles later the crankshaft exploded.
