i have posted before and whinned about how my F-350 IDI smokes and has no power here in the new mexico mountains. a couple of days ago a mechanic told me there was really nothing i could do, but that i should install a hi-flow air cleaner. so i took his advise and went down and paid 80.00 bucks for a K&N air filter. that is without a doubt the best investment i ever made. the smoking has all but been eliminated, power is up, and the truck runs smoother. i am driving at above 7000 ft. above sea level.
i am thinking about having my air cleaner modified to have two 6 inch hoses run out to the grille area. i know now that you cannot afford to choke this engine down. i have a cold air induction setup now. i'm sure my milage will increase greatly, because of the filter change. i use diesel kleen and that helped also.
harleyjohn45, please service the K&N very often. Once the oil on the filter is absorbed by the dust it stops, the dust goes right through.
I work construction and the dust was too much for the K&N.
I think it was part of the reason my 6.9 was DRINKING oil at 300,000 miles.
1 gallon per 100 miles at freeway speeds is drinking.
I went back to a paper filter on my turbo motor, I just change it every oil change.
