Nitrous/Propane/H20 Thread

Thought it might be of some use to the diesel performance community here at FTE to get a discussion thread going about nitrous, propane, and water injection systems for diesel engines, not limited to one particular engine type.

Anyone out there running any of the three on any Ford diesel engine, lets post questions, advice, ideas, technical discussion, ect. here

I know from your old posts and signature that you have 2 of the 3, water and propane. Do you have any experience with atmosphere in a bottle?

Yes, I actually dropped the propane a while back in favor of it after I found some new ways to get fuel into the cylinders

Of the three, nitrous is by far the most effective and safest, but they all have their uses.

hey Matt I ran out of Meth, what happens when I just put water in the tank? not worth it? i figure maybe itll cool em down a bit. Or is it stupid to ask if water alone would give me HP ?

No Hp gain from water, but you will still get the cooling effect.

Matt you got the twins on that thing??? I haven't been up in the 6.0 forum for so long, I think you were still building the motor last time I was there.

I've got propane on my 1984 6.9NA and it makes a world of difference when towing! I can pull my 24' gooseneck with my race car on it 70mph in OD up most hills w/o having to downshift, w/o the propane I would have to downshift to 4th and would slow down to about 58-60mph to climb hills. I am seriously debating on putting propane on my 1999 (early) PSD...any thougths on that?Bowedup

INDUSTRIAL......

IF U CAN PICKUP SOME WINTER FORMULA W/WASHER FLUID IT CONTAINS ANYWHERE FROM 20% TO 40% METHANOL. I RUN 2 OR 3 TO 1 WATER/METH.
CHECK WITH MATT ON THIS BUT I BELIEVE THERE ARE SOME TIMING ISSUES RUNNING TO HIGH A CONCENTRATION OF METH

Cooling gives you power though...
A few WW2 planes (most notably the Corsair) used water injection as a "getaway" method, power would jump 10-20%.
This depends on how much boost you are running though.

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
I have been on this site for a good while and i have read just about everything PSD 60L FX4 and other have been talking about meth and water since way back. well i have always wanted it , i see that your % gain is good but not crazy it seems unless you start doing big turbo's with this and that and whatever.. How does it compare to lets say my old predator, or my SCT. Money wise and or performance.. Seeing as the tuner is way fast to install and doesnt require filling tanks and well carrying tanks. You know what i mean. What kinda gain can you see using both. It doesnt multiply. This is my daily driver of a min of 80mi a day. Thats door to door to work with no other stop. So relability is very important. I have 43k with no issues. Sorry to take up so much time and well responces. I am just a novice in this area and would hate to make a bad decision.. Is this something for the guy who has a few hours a weekend to tweek and deal with down time messing with it..Thanks in advance

How is nitrous more safer than propane? I am curious because I am going/thinking about adding water/meth next. I am curious about the nitrous though. Hs anyone ran all 3 at the same time? Right now I am having problems putting the power to the ground. I need to do more to the transmission. I am staying in the red-line and boosting 33psi and waiting for the gears to change far too long.

Nitrous doesnt effect your timing like propane or meth. Its been coined, "atmoshpere in a bottle" because it is basicaly air.

Main advantage is it WILL burn any unburned fuel in the cyclinders, because it is oxygen and nitrogen, both of which burn, AND it cools at the same time, so you may see a drop in EGT's.

personaly I don't think anyone needs nitous until they are not able to clear up the smoke with just a good charger, but, to each his own. it would be fun to play with, I just dont need it right now.

Nitrogen burns? umm, I don't think so.

Yeah, I am with you. I know nitrogen does not burn. I think it helps the fuel itself burn hotter or completely like oxygen does. Propane also gives you a complete burn. That is why I had an increase in mileage.

RYAN THE BIGGEST BENEFITOF WATER METH INJECTIONIS THE COOLING EFFECT. IT LOWERS THE INTAKE AIR TEMP, AND THE EXHAUST TEMPS. IT ENABLES YOU TO PUSH A BIT MORE FUEL AND TIMING FOR INCREASED PERFORMANCE WITH OUT THE EGT'S GOING THRU THE ROOF. I PERSONALLY LOVE THE WAY MY TRUCK RUNS ON W/M..IT SEEMS TO GIVE YOU A SMOOTHER POWER BAND. BTW. THE W/M IS ESPECIALLY USEFUL IF YOU TOW ALOT

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
Thanks that makes alot of sence. I dont really tow to much besides a bass boat nothing really the truck really knows is there. Is it a complicated set up to run W/M. How do you get the Meth. You recharge bottles im sure.. and what you just bolt it in the bed of the truck or something.. How much is it to fill. Is it worth the money for the returns.. As it is keeping the engine cooler would you say that this is something that would prolong the life of the truck and finally what do you do about taking it in for service..Im sure its not a 10 min install. Plus im sure it leaves some kinda trace physically on the engine as they would probably wonder why new lines are ran to the engine from the truck bed.. Just curious about these things wondering if it is somehting that would be cost effective for me to have on something i mainly use on the highway.. Curious about the danger factor as well..
