Can someone give me a list of things to run down to solve excessive popping while engine braking. I found a couple of other posts that were basically inconclusive.
Specs: New points, cap, rotor, condensor, plugs, wires, filters, etc.; exhaust is 2 into 1 with glasspack and side outlet (all new). Engine is all original/stock (360 2bbl) with 66K miles.
I know the exhaust is going to be somewhat loud as it is currently set up, but this is rediculous.
Man, you have a glasspack on it. I have dual glasspacks ran out the back with a built 302, timing is perfect and so is the carb. It pops whenever i run the rpms up high and back off. I also have glasspacks on my 70 with a 360, it backfires pretty bad too.
The Motorcraft/Autolite 2BBL carbs run rich in that situation, I had one on a 300-6 with an Offenhauser intake that would blow 6+ foot flames out both sidepipes like dual cannons going downhill. You just never saw the flames from it before because the stock exhaust restricts flow so much.
Mine just started with the backfiring about halfway through the day yesterday...I'm going to check it out this morning...I am thinking my timing slipped a little...it appears that oil is leaking around the dist. shaft ( ?I guess the seal down there is bad) and I think all that oil has allowed the dist. to turn slightly...I'll let you know what I find.
Well, went in to have a look....found the dwell at about 19 or 20 degrees....SO I decidced to re-adjust the points....I think I may have a "dimple and pit" because after I adjusted them to feeler gauge gap, the dwell dropped to about 12 degrees....BUT, in diddling with the distributor, I found that the vacuum diaphram was loose, so I tightened the two screws and it now seems to be running smoother...I have yet to run it under load...so I'll let you know if that cured the backfire.
I checked the vacuum advance and it's not functioning (and tastes horrible). I'll replace it and tell you if it tastes any better...er...I mean...if it works.
Mine used to pop like that when I had glass packs on it. I kind of liked it but they were'nt real loud, just a rummbling with a pop pop once in a while. I put on a supposedly rebuilt 2 barrel autolite and it went to really popping, real loud popping. I tore the carb apart and found that the throttle shafts were wore out and real loose. I wonder if that was the casue?
