weak vacume pump

I Think I Have A Week Vacume Pump....the One That Is Located On The Passenger Fender Well And Locks The Auto Hubs.

This Is What Happens. Happens Periodically, Mostly When Very Hot Outside And Have Been Driving....switch To 4x4 And When I Do This The A/c Vents Will Switch To Defrost Because Of Low Vacume. If I Give It Enough Time, The Vacume Apparently Builds Back Up And The A/c Will Switch Back To Panel And Hubs Stay Locked.

I Have Checked The Vacume Lines For Leaks Or Dry Rot Or Loose Connections But Cannot Find Any. Hubs Are Locking But It Seems That As Soon As I Turn The Dash Switch To 4x4, The Vac Pump Starts Up.

I Think That The Pump Cuts Off Too Early And Does Not Build Up Enough Vacume In The Reserve Canister.looks Like There Is A Cut Out Switch Within In The Little Pump That Turns The Pump On Or Off When Vacume Is Low Or Needs Building Up. Obviously, There Is No Way That The Pump Could Lock The Hubs Without The Reserve Canister.

Anyway , Am I On The Right Track To Get A New Vacume Pump Or Should I Be Checking Something Else???? Just Seems Like The Darn Thing Should Build Up A Stronger Vacume Before Cuting Off.

Has This Problem Occured To Anyone Else.
All Replys Are Helpfull.

I would tee a vacuum gauge between the pump and reservoir to check the strength of the vacuum. I don't know how low it should pull, but should be holding when turned off. I would think at least 20 inches of vacuum. I would also think there is a check valve on the reservoir or pump to hold the vacuum when the vacuum pump is off. I hope this may help.

Well....went Ahead And Talked To The Guy In The Service Department At The Dealership Since No One Here Will Reply. I Also Read Thru The Forums To Try To Solve My Problem.

Dealership Guy Said.
1. Check All Lines For Rot, Cracks, Ect........i Did And They Are Fine.
2. Make Sure Pump Is Coming On.....it Does
3. Pumps Will Usually Just Quit ....not Get Weak.
4. There Is A Vacuum Cylinoid Valve Next To The Pump And They Do Usually Go Bad By Leaking After "dumping The Vacume".
So I Bought A New Valve (about $35.00 ) Easy To Install
5. Finialy.....he Said My Auto Locking Hubs Could Be Leaking And That One Way To Check For Leaks Was To Blow Cigarette Smoke Into The Vacuum Lines At The Wheels And See If The Smoke Comes Out The Hubs.
Said That If Leaking It Could Be From The Outer O Rings Or From The Internal Seals.

Anyway .......hear Is The Info I Have To Share.
Please Chime In If Any Other Info Or Advice Is Known Of

Come On.........i Dare Ya

Do you know if your reservoir should hold the vacuum all the time? Does your pump turn on every time you start your truck after sitting all night? Also, Muekster replied to you, did you try his idea?

well 4x4, your attitude is wanting. you gave the group 8 hours to respond before you pulled your "Since no one will reply" attitude. If you had checked you already had a legitmate response to your questions.

I have a couple ideas to solve this issue as I dealt with the same thing. But some how your attitude got in the way and I don't care to help anymore.

Good Luck

By the way, it is spelled "VACUUM".

Please Excuse My Over Anxious Wording From My Previous Post.

And A Special Apology To You Metalsmith...for My Spelling And My Additude. I Did Not Mean To Come Off The Wrong Way.
Did Not Realize The Time Span Was So Short.

However, I Did Share My Findings With The Group And Would Sincerly Appreciate Any Other Info The Group May Have.

Once Again...i'm Sorry.....i'm Sorry........i'm Sorry.

Also .....metalsmith......please Try Not To Be So Quick To Judge A Person That You Really Don't Know. You Base My Character Off Of Just One Remark. .....i'm Really A Nice Person If You Knew Me.

Does it happen any time other than when you engage the hubs? Since the motor shuts off normally you should be able to eliminate the pump, reservoir and climate control system. That only leaves the hubs.

If you have a small vacuum pump you migh try pulling a load on them manually and see if either or both of them will hold.

The Problem Seems To Have Gone Away After Replacing The Vacuum Cylinoid Valve ( Located Next To The Pump And Canister ).

Also, Cookies, The Problem Was Only When Switching To 4x4 And Not Ever At Any Other Time. So I Think Your Right To Eliminate The Pump Canister And Climated Control Systems.

Correct Me If I'm Wrong But I Was Thinking That On The Auto Locking Hubs That When Locked In 4x4 , The System Does Not Actually Hold A Constant Vacuum On The Hubs But More Like A Vacuum Surge To Engage Them And Then When You Put It Back In 2x4, There Is Another Surge To Unengage Them.

I Found Myself Believing This Theory After Puting It In 4x4 And Making Sure The Hubs Were Locked And Then Turning The Truck Off While Still In 4x4 And Then Going Out To The Wheel And Disconnecting One Of The Vacuum Lines And The Hub Is Still Locked In. ( With The Line Disconnected ).
Then, Reconnecting The Line And Turning The Truck Back On And Switching It Back To 2x4 And Checking The Hub To Make Sure It Is Unlocked.

Anyway I Might Be Way Off Base Here

Nevermind The Theory, I Was Way Off Base.
Went Out And Did The Test Again And Could Here The Vacuum Escaping And The Pump Start Up After Disconnecting The Vacuum Line From The Wheel.

I Was Wrong....it Does Constantly Hold Vacuum When 4x4 Is Selected.

However, I Cannot Get The Problem I Was Having To Happen Again At This Time.

Maybe It Was The Valve I Replaced Or Maybe One Of My Hubs Is Leaking But Only Sometimes. What A Pain. I Guess I'll Just See If It Happens Again And Then Look At Replacing Or Repairing The Hubs Later On.

That's a good thing. Hopefully it means you fixed it with the solenoid.
